HOSSA HURT IN PENS DEBUT

Penguins forward Marian Hossa, acquired at the trade deadline from the Atlanta Thrashers, injured his right knee in his first game for Pittsburgh and sat out the third period of Thursday's 5-1 loss to the Boston Bruins.

Hossa, a five-time all-star, skated just 13 shifts before banging knees with Bruins forward Glen Murray in the second period.

He reportedly suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament in the knee, and will miss about a week.

Hossa, who has 26 goals and 30 assists in 60 games, was acquired by Pittsburgh at Tuesday's trade deadline with forward Pascal Dupuis for forwards Colby Armstrong and Erik Christensen, prospect Angelo Esposito and a first-round draft pick.

The Penguins are also without captain Sidney Crosby, out since Jan. 18 with a sprained right ankle, and forward Gary Roberts, who hasn't played since breaking his leg on Dec. 29.

CANADIAN WOMEN'S COLLEGE HOCKEY PLAYER SUSPENDED FOR PUNCHING LINESMAN

A player on the University of Moncton women's hockey team has been suspended for one year after striking a linesman in the face three times.

Atlantic University Sport announced on Thursday that Josianne Bisaillon, a first-year defenceman for Aigles Bleues, will sit out the entire 2008-09 regular and playoff season.

During a semifinal game game last Saturday between the Aigles Bleues and Nova Scotia's Saint Mary's University Huskies, shoving started in the final seconds of the game. After the buzzer the tussle between the players continued, and when officials began to break up the fight, Bisaillon punched a female linesman three times.

"Student athletes are expected to treat officials with respect at all times and physical contact won't be tolerated", said Jennifer Myers, chair for women's hockey with Atlantic University Sport.

Atlantic University Sport reviewed a video of the game, interviewed the people involved in the incident and talked to witnesses in making its ruling, Myers said.

It's the first time that there has been an assault of an official in women's hockey within Atlantic University Sport, Myers said, and Hockey Canada and Hockey Nova Scotia were consulted on how they've dealt with similar situations.

Hockey Canada rules have a minimum suspension of one year for hitting an official. The university has four days to appeal the decision and is planning to do so, said athletic director Marc Boudreau.

Boudreau said the only video the university has seen pans away from the fight by Saint Mary's net after the final buzzer and doesn't show the strikes Bisaillon is accused of.

BETTMAN TESTIFIES NHL IS STEROID-FREE

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman told a U.S. House subcommittee on Wednesday that hockey is not plagued by steroid use among its players.

Bettman joined his major-league counterparts — baseball commissioner Bud Selig, NBA commissioner David Stern and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell — in Washington where he testified that only one player has tested positive for steroid use in the 2½ years since the NHL resumed play after the 2004-05 lockout.

"As a historical matter, the many years that NHL players have been tested in international competition, as well as recent testing under our program, suggests that performance-enhancing drugs had never been part of the culture of the NHL and that instances of use by our players have been extremely rare," Bettman told the House subcommittee on commerce, trade and consumer protection during his opening remarks. "This is not surprising when one considers the alleged benefits of steroid use, significant large muscle development, are not consistent with playing hockey at the highest level of the sport, and the resulting bulkiness attributable to steroid use simply is not the desired characteristic of skilled NHL players."

Bettman went on to outline the NHL's drug-testing policy, in which a player is suspended 20 games for a first violation, 60 games for a second violation and a permanent ban for a third violation.

Paul Kelly, head of the NHLPA, echoed Bettman's sentiments, saying that "the stakes are high and we are fully committed to seeing that drug use has no place in hockey."

Before the league commissioners and other union heads had a chance to speak, members of the subcommittee delivered their opening statements, with some supporting the idea of the U.S. federal government legislating standard drug-testing policies for pro sports leagues.

Wednesday's panel is not connected to the House committee that held hearings on Jan. 15 on former Senate majority leader George Mitchell's investigation into drugs in baseball and where Roger Clemens denied on Feb. 13 that he had used steroid and human growth hormone as alleged in the Mitchell report.

SENS FIRE PADDOCK

John Paddock didn't last a full season as Ottawa'a head coach, as he was let go Wednesday after back-to-back shutout losses.

After a torrid 15-2 start, the Senators won just 21 of their next 47 games (21-20-6), including being shut out on consecutive nights: 5-0 at home to Toronto on Monday, and 4-0 in Boston on Tuesday.

Assistant coach Ron Low was also let go, with assistant coach Greg Carvel, Eli Wilson, Randy Lee and Tim Pattyson staying on.

Bryan Murray, who left the bench last season to take over as general manager when John Muckler was let go, will coach for the balance of the season.

Paddock had been with Ottawa for six years, serving as an assistant coach and as head coach with the team's American Hockey League affiliate in Binghamton, N.Y. He was returning to the NHL as a head coach after a 13-year absence. He coached the Winnipeg Jets between 1991 and 1994.

Murray led the Senators to the Stanley Cup final last season in his second year as the team's coach. He boasted a 100-46-18 record in two seasons behind Ottawa's bench and has 665 wins in an NHL coaching career that began in 1981. He ranks fourth on the all-time wins list.

As general manager, Murray was unable to swing a major deal by Tuesday's deadline. He obtained Martin Lapointe, whom he coached in Detroit, in exchange for a draft pick.

Earlier in the month, he sent defenceman Joe Corvo and forward Patrick Eaves to Carolina for veterans Cory Stillman and Mike Commodore, who both won a Stanley Cup with the Hurricanes in 2006.

CATS GRANT KILGER LEAVE OF ABSENCE

Just one day after the Florida Panthers acquired Chad Kilger acquired in a trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Panthers granted him a leave of absence due to personal reasons.

Kilger flew back to Toronto after meeting with Jacques Martin, the Panthers coach and general manager, and team officials said it wasn't known when he would return.

Martin is expected to talk about Kilger's situation later today. Kilger missed five games earlier this season after being granted a leave of absence by the Maple Leafs.

Kilger has 10 goals and seven assists in 53 games with Toronto this season.

CANADIAN WOMEN'S HOCKEY PLAYER ACCUSED OF PUNCHING LINESMAN

A player on the Université de Moncton's women's hockey team is facing a possible suspension after an accusation that she punched a linesman three times.

Josianne Bisaillon, a first-year defenceman for Aigles Bleues, is accused of hitting the official at the end of a playoff game on Saturday. Moncton, the defending champions of Atlantic University Sport, lost 3-2 to Nova Scotia's Saint Mary's University Huskies and is out of the playoffs.

"Within women's hockey, we have not had an incident like this before," said Jennifer Myers, chair for women's hockey with Atlantic University Sport.

Myers said the organization has contacted Hockey Nova Scotia and Hockey Canada for advice on how they've dealt with similar situations.

There's a range of consequences that could be handed down, said Darren Cossar, executive director for Hockey Nova Scotia.

Atlantic University Sport officials will be reviewing a video of the incident on, Myers said. A decision whether to disclipine the player should be made before next week.

Since the season is over for Moncton, any suspension Bisaillon might receive would be served at the beginning of next season. According to Aigles Bleues coach Denis Ross, Bisaillon doesn't remember exactly what happened during the incident.

The shoving started near Saint Mary's net in the final seconds of the game and then continued after the final buzzer, which is when the alleged assault on the female linesman took place.

All sides are depending on the video to determine what happened.

TRADE DEADLINE RECAP

There were several trades made prior to the 3pm ET deadline on Tuesday, and here's a recap of what went down.

First off, the Minnesota Wild picked up enforcer Chris Simon from the New York Islanders in exchange for a sixth-round pick.

This move could be a sign that Derek Boogaard's back injury might be more severe than originally thought, as the Boogieman has only played in 25 games this season, and if you want to jump to conclusions it's possible his Wild career could be coming to an end. While Simon does have a history of suspensions, it's a chance for a fresh start and with just a sixth-round pick given in return it's a low risk move should it not pan out and Simon gets another 30 game suspension for an on ice incident.

The Pittsburgh Penguins may have found the winger they need to complement Sid Crosby as they obtained Marian Hossa, along with Pascal Dupuis from the Atlanta Thrashers in exchange for Colby Armsrtong, Erik Christensen, Angelo Esposito and a first-round draft pick.

Hossa is eligible for unrestricted free agency on July 1, and has 26 goals and 56 points in 60 games this season.

The Dallas Stars snared forward Brad Richards and goaltender Johan Holmqvist from the Tampa Bay Lightning for goaltender Mike Smith, forwards Jussi Jokinen and Jeff Halpern and a fourth-round pick.

Richards, the Conn Smythe Trophy winner as top playoff performer in 2004, has 18 goals and 51 points in 62 games this season.

Unable to negotiate a contract extension, the Buffalo Sabres dealt defenceman Brian Campbell and a seventh-rounder to the San Jose Sharks for defenceman Steve Bernier and a first-rounder. San Jose also traded defenceman Rob Davison to the New York Islanders for a seventh-rounder.

The Washington Capitals were extremely active on trade deadline day, acquiring forward Sergei Fedorov from the Columbus Blue Jackets for defenceman Theo Ruth.

The Caps later swapped forward Matt Pettinger for Matt Cooke of the Vancouver Canucks, and forward Joe Motzko for Thrashers forward Alex Giroux, along with obtaining goaltender Cristobal Huet from the Montreal Canadiens for a second round pick.

The Florida Panthers received two forwards from Toronto — Chad Kilger for a third-rounder and Wade Belak for a fifth-rounder. The Cats later shipped Ruslan Salei to the Colorado Avalanche for fellow defenceman Karlis Skrastins and a third-rounder.

Defenceman Brad Stuart was the lone acquisition by the Detroit Red Wings, coming from the Los Angeles Kings for a second- and a fourth-rounder.

The Kings unloaded goaltender Jean-Sebastien Aubin for a seventh-rounder from the Anaheim Ducks, who traded forward Brandon Bochenski to the Nashville Predators for future considerations.

Anaheim also nabbed defenceman Marc-Andre Bergeron from the Islanders for a third-rounder.

Nashville filled Bochenski's roster spot with forward Jan Hlavac, sending a seventh-rounder to the Lightning.

After signing with the Colorado Avalanche on monday, Peter Forsberg will be reunited with defenceman Adam Foote, as the Avs secured their former defenceman from their Stanley Cup teams in 1996 and 2000 from the Columbus Blue Jackets for first and fourth round conditional picks.

The Chicago Blackhawks dealt forward Martin Lapointe to the Ottawa Senators for a sixth-rounder, and sent forward Tuomo Ruutu to the Carolina Hurricanes for forward Andrew Ladd.

The Phoenix Coyotes dealt forward Josh Gratton, goaltender David Leneveu and forward Fredrik Sjostrom to the New York Rangers for forward Marcel Hossa and goaltender Al Montoya.

The New York Rangers relinquished a fourth-rounder for defenceman Christian Backman from the St. Louis Blues, who also sent defenceman Bryce Salvador to the New Jersey Devils for enforcer Cam Janssen.

SELANNE, KIPRUSOFF, BRODEUR 'THREE STARS' OF THE WEEK

Anaheim Ducks right wing Teemu Selanne, Calgary Flames goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff and New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur have been named the NHL's 'Three Stars' for the week ending February 24.

First Star -- Teemu Selanne, RW, Anaheim (LA) Ducks

Selanne tallied seven points (five goals, two assists) as the Ducks posted three consecutive victories and improved to 9-1-0 since the 15-year veteran returned to the lineup. Selanne notched one goal in a 3-2 shootout win over the Colorado Avalanche Feb. 20, tallied once in a 2-1 overtime victory over the St. Louis Blues Feb. 22 and recorded five points (three goals, two assists) in a 6-3 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks Feb. 24. Selanne's 20th career NHL hat trick increased his career goals total to 546, moving him past Maurice Richard (544) into 25th place on the all-time list. He also reached the 600-assist milestone in the contest.

Second Star -- Mikka Kiprusoff, G, Calgary Flames

Kiprusoff went 3-0-0 with a 0.67 goals-against average, .980 save percentage and one shutout, stopping 100 of 102 shots as the Flames posted four consecutive victories and moved into first place in the Northwest Division. He made 24 saves in a 4-1 win over the Phoenix Coyotes Feb. 19, recorded his 25th career NHL shutout by making 38 saves in a 1-0 win over the Detroit Red Wings Feb. 22 and stopped 38 of 39 shots in a 2-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild Feb. 24. Kiprusoff has posted a 32-19-8 record, 2.71 goals-against average, .903 save percentage and one shutout in 60 games this season.

He also ranks among the League leaders this season in goals-against average (fourth, 2.15) and save percentage (fifth, .920).

FORSBERG RETURNS TO AVS

Free-agent forward Peter Forsberg confirmed Monday night that he is returning to the Colorado Avalanche for the rest of the season.

Forsberg agreed to a one-year, $5-million contract with Colorado pro-rated through the end of the season, which means he'll pocket about $1.1-million.

The 34-year-old has spent the past year in his native Sweden trying to recover from chronic foot problems that had him contemplating retirement. Yet last Monday, he issued a statement through his agent, Don Baizley, that he wasn't expecting to play this season.

"I always wanted to be honest with teams coming down the stretch," Forsberg said. "I was, like, 'If you want to go in a different direction, please do. Don't wait for me. I didn't want to be a burden. That is why I came out and said that."

Forsberg underwent separate surgeries on both ankles in 2006, getting the bones realigned and lax ligaments firmed up because they affected his balance and put undue stress on his abdomen.

He split 57 games between the Philadelphia Flyers and the Predators last season, finishing with 13 goals and 45 points.

The five-time all-star has totalled 248 goals and 623 assists for 871 points in 697 games with the Quebec Nordiques, Avalanche, Flyers and Predators since being selected sixth overall in the 1991 NHL draft.

Forsberg captured the Calder Trophy as the NHL's top rookie in 1995 and was voted the leagues MVP in 2003. He won Stanley Cups with Colorado in 1996 and 2001, and helped Sweden capture the gold medal at the 2006 Torino Olympic Winter Games.

BOYLE STRUCK BY LIGHTNING FOR $40M

Tampa Bay Lightning defenceman Dan Boyle reached terms late Monday on a six-year contract extension, reportedly worth $40-million.

Boyle has posted three goals and eight assists for 11 points in 17 games this season, averaging a little less than 28 minutes of ice time per game. Over 9 NHL seasons with the Florida Panthers and Lightning, the 31-year-old has totalled 75 goals and 278 points in 503 games.

Last season Boyle set a franchise record for a defenceman with 20 goals.

RANGERS LOSE MARA FOR 2 WEEKS

New York Rangers defenceman Paul Mara has scheduled facial surgery and will be sidelined for two weeks.

The 28-year-old suffered the injury on a high scheck from forward Patrick Kaleta three minutes into Saturday's 4-3 victory over the Buffalo Sabres, and he missed Sunday's game against the Florida Panthers.

Mara has posted one goal and 16 assists in 55 games this season, and in 557 career NHL games with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Phoenix Coyotes, Boston Bruins and Rangers has 58 goals and 218 points.

BLUES INK JACKMAN FOR $14.4M

St. Louis Blues defenceman Barret Jackman was rewarded Monday with a four-year contract extension worth $14.4-million.

Jackman, who was eligible to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, will make $3.6-million annually.

The 17th overall pick by St. Louis in the 1999 entry draft, Jackman has two goals and six assists with 63 penalty minutes in 58 games this season, and in 289 NHL games has registered 13 goals and 67 points with 532 penalty minutes.

The 26-year-old won the Calder Trophy as the NHL's top rookie in 2002-03.

FLYERS GET PROSPAL FROM LIGHTNING

The Philadelphia Flyers reacquired forward Vaclav Prospal from the Tampa Bay Lightning late Monday for Alexandre Picard and a conditional draft pick.

If the Flyers reach the conference finals, they will surrender a second-round pick rather than a third-rounder.

Prospal has 29 goals and 57 points in 62 games this season, but is slated to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Picard has five goals and 21 points in 25 games with the AHL's Philadelphia Phantoms this season.

SELANNE PASSES RICHARD IN DUCKS WIN

Right next to the miniature Stanley Cup in Teemu Selanne's trophy case at home is the Maurice Richard Trophy he earned as the NHL's top goal scorer for the 1998-99 season.

Now Selanne has more goals than the Rocket.

Selanne scored three times in the Anaheim Ducks' 6-3 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday, passing Richard to move into 25th place on the career goals list with 546. He also had two assists, including his 600th.

Selanne was the first recipient of the award named in honour of the former Montreal Canadiens star.

Selanne has played in 1,051 regular-season games — 73 more than Richard, who in 1944-45 became the first player in league history to score 50 goals in 50 games.

ZUBOZ OUT 3-4 WEEKS

Dallas Stars defenceman Sergei Zubov is expected to miss the next three to four weeks after undergoing surgery on his foot on Sunday.

Doctors inserted a screw in the fractured bone in his foot, according to a team statement released Monday.

Zubov has missed the past 17 games due to the problem foot and has missed 20 games in total this season due to injury.

The veteran Russian defenceman has four goals and 35 points in 46 games for Dallas this season. He also leads the club in assists (31) and average ice time (25:41).

Earlier this season, he became just the 15th defencemen in NHL history to record 600 career assists. He's also the only active NHL blue-liner with at least 30 assists in each of the past 12 seasons.

Zubov was named to the Western Conference roster for the NHL All-Star Game in Atlanta last month, but was unable to participate due to a groin injury.

PENS RECALL FLEURY FROM MINOR LEAGUE STINT

The Pittsburgh Penguins recalled goalie Marc-Andre Fleury from his minor-league rehabilitation stint on Sunday, making him likely to return to the NHL team's lineup later this week.

Fleury hasn't played since Dec. 6 when he suffered a high ankle sprain in a 3-2 loss in Calgary. The same type of injury has sidelined star center Sidney Crosby since Jan. 18. The Pittsburgh captain didn't skate before the Penguins' games Saturday or Sunday and and his return remains uncertain, though he's believed to be aiming for mid-March.

Fleury, who tied for third in the NHL with 40 victories last season, was expected to be out six to eight weeks, but his recovery has taken longer than expected.

The 23-year-old played well in all five starts he made with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the AHL, allowing seven goals. He was 3-2, with both losses occurring in 1-0 games.

Fleury, the Number one pick in the 2003 draft, still has some pain in his right ankle but said, "I can play through it."

Before getting hurt, Fleury had won his last four starts and was 9-8-1 with a 2.90 goals-against average.

Fleury will make an equipment change once he returns: he is discarding the bright yellow goalie pads he has worn since his rookie season in 2003-04 and will wear white pads, as Conklin and Sabourin do. During his injury layoff, Fleury was shown statistics that suggested goalies who wear brightly coloured pads tend to give up more goals than those who wear white pads.

With Fleury returning, the Penguins reassigned forward Connor James to Wilkes-Barre.

SUNDIN WON'T WAIVE NO-TRADE CLAUSE

After deliberating over the weekend, Mats Sundin told interim general manager Cliff Fletcher that he will not waive his no-trade clause.

With the 37-year-old due to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, he was considered one of the NHL's most coveted players heading into the 3pm ET trade deadline on Tuesday, and an attractive short-term option for teams seeking help for the stretch run of the regular season and the playoffs, but Sundin decided to not waive his no-trade clause and stay put in Toronto for the rest of the season.

Fletcher said he had no hard feelings about Sundin's decision.

Heading into Monday night the Maple Leafs were seven points out of a playoff spot.

FLYERS LOSE RICHARDS FOR 3 WEEKS

The Philadelphia Flyers head into Buffalo tonight as losers of their last 10 games and, now, without their best player, Mike Richards when they take on the Sabres.

Richards injured his left hamstring in the team's 2-1 home loss to Florida on Saturday night and is expected to miss three weeks.

The 23-year-old leads the Flyers in goals, assists, plus-minus rating and short-handed goals. He signed a mammoth 12-year, $69-million US contract in December.

Philadelphia (30-25-7 heading into Monday) has already lost Simon Gagné for the season after his third concussion, with Joffrey Lupul and Derian Hatcher also on the shelf for the foreseeable future with injuries.

Leading their Atlantic Division just a few weeks ago, the 0-8-2 slump has seen the Flyers plummet to a tie for ninth place in the Eastern Conference.

Also, for Buffalo, monday's game could be the last in a Sabres uniform for Brian Campbell. The 28-year-old defenceman is an unrestricted free agent in the summer and has not been able to come to terms with general manager Darcy Regier on a new contract.

Regier will have to weigh whether to trade the highly coveted Campbell before Tuesday's trade deadline or to keep him for the playoff push in hopes of working out a new deal in the off-season.

Jochen Hecht could return for the Sabres on Monday after missing time with a leg injury.
