KOVALCHUK, HOSSA ADDED TO EAST ALL-STAR ROSTER

Left wing Ilya Kovalchuk and right wing Marian Hossa from the All-Star host Atlanta Thrashers headline the list of additions to the Eastern Conference roster for the 2008 NHL All-Star Game, Sunday, Jan. 27 at Philips Arena in Atlanta.

Kovalchuk, who tallied his League-leading 36th goal Thursday against Florida and is on pace for a 65-goal season, will be making his second career All-Star Game appearance. His 61 points (36 goals, 25 assists) rank second in the NHL scoring race, two behind the Tampa Bay Lightning's Vincent Lecavalier. Hossa, who in 2006-07 became the first player in Thrashers history to score 100 points and who ranks second on the club in scoring this season with 16-22--38 in 42 games, will play in his fourth All-Star Game.

Left wing Dany Heatley and center Jason Spezza of the Eastern Conference's top- ranked Ottawa Senators also were added, joining the third member of the NHL's highest-scoring trio, right wing Daniel Alfredsson, who was voted to the starting lineup. The three would be the first forward line from the same club to skate in an All-Star Game since the Pittsburgh Penguins' Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr and Kevin Stevens represented the Prince of Wales Conference in 1992 at Philadelphia.

Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin, whose 32 goals rank second in the NHL to Kovalchuk, has been selected to his second All-Star Game berth. The Russian pair were teammates at the 2007 World Championships in Moscow and the 2006 Olympics in Turin.

Heatley also will reunite with Kovalchuk; the linemates broke into the NHL with the Thrashers in 2001-02 and finished 1-2 in Calder Trophy voting, respectively, as the League's top rookies. Heatley played three seasons with Atlanta before his trade to Ottawa in August, 2005, the deal in which the Thrashers acquired Hossa.

Joining Spezza as first-time All-Stars named today are New York Islanders goaltender Rick DiPietro and Philadelphia Flyers center Mike Richards.

Others named to the Eastern Conference roster: goaltender Tomas Vokoun of the Florida Panthers; defensemen Brian Campbell of the Buffalo Sabres, Sergei Gonchar of the Penguins, Tomas Kaberle of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Kimmo Timonen of the Philadelphia Flyers, and forwards Scott Gomez of the New York Rangers, Martin St. Louis of the Lightning and Eric Staal of the Carolina Hurricanes.

The head coach of the Eastern Conference All-Stars will be the Senators' John Paddock, making his first career All-Star Game coaching appearance.

The roster additions were selected by the NHL’s Hockey Operations Department, after consultation with League General Managers.

The players selected today join Alfredsson and the other five players voted by fans to the starting lineup, forwards Sidney Crosby of the Penguins and Vincent Lecavalier of the Lightning, defensemen Andrei Markov of the Montreal Canadiens and Zdeno Chara of the Boston Bruins and goaltender Martin Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils.

LEIPOLD BUYS THE WILD

Craig Leipold agreed to purchase the Minnesota Wild, more then a month after selling the Nashville Predators to local investors.

Leipold is buying the majority shares of Bob Naegele and his group, who formed Minnesota Sports and Entertainment in 1997, the year St. Paul was awarded an NHL expansion franchise.

According to Minnesota Sports and Entertainment vice-chairman Jac Sperling, the deal is expected to take several months to close and is pending the approval of the NHL and the city of St. Paul. The MSE also owns the minor league Houston Aeros, the Minnesota Swarm of the National Lacrosse League, and the Xcel Energy Center.

Naegele, a Minnesota native, has seen the Wild sell out every game since the NHL returned in 2000, seven years after the North Stars defected to Dallas.

Leipold, who resides in Racine, Wi, completed the sale of the Predators on Dec. 7 for $193-million, and said he lost $70-million since Nashville began play in 1998.

CAPS SIGN OVECHKIN TO RECORD EXTENSION

Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin agreed to a 13-year, $124-million contract extension, the first $100-million deal in NHL history.

Considered one of the NHL's elite players, the Russian winger would certainly have attracted a lucrative offer sheet had he become a restricted free agent on July 1.

In the final year of an entry level three year contract, Ovechkin's base salary this season is $984,200, but $3.83-million if you account for bonuses.

The contract, which he negotiated by himself without an agent, breaks down to $9- million in each of the first six years and $10-million annually over the final seven.

The number one overall pick in the 2004 draft has totalled 130 goals and 250 points in 206 games, and has 32 goals and 52 points thru 43 games this season.

The former Calder Trophy winner is now committed to Washington through the 2020-21 season.

'HAWKS TRADE JOHANSSON FOR DRAFT PICK

The Chicago Blackhawks traded Swedish defenceman Magnus Johansson to the Florida Panthers.

The 34 year-old rookis has played 18 games for the Blackhawks this season after being signed as a free agent over the summer.

In exchange, Chicago picked up Florida's seventh-round pick in the 2009 draft.

Prior to playing in the NHL, Johansson captained his hometown team of Linkoping in the Swedish Elite League. He scored 92 points in 149 games with Linkoping, leading the team to the SEL finals in 2007.

Florida's blue-line has been plagued by injuries, with Branislav Mezei, Noah Welch, Mike Van Ryan and Cory Murphy all currently out of the lineup.

GETZLAF, KOPITAR, GABORIK ADDED TO WEST ALL-STAR ROSTER

Centers Ryan Getzlaf of the Anaheim Ducks, Anze Kopitar of the Los Angeles Kings and Paul Stastny of the Colorado Avalanche -- three of the NHL's brightest young stars all under the age of 23 -- headline the 16 players named to the Western Conference roster for the 2008 NHL All-Star Game, Sunday, Jan. 27 at Philips Arena in Atlanta.

Getzlaf, 22, leads the Ducks in scoring with 48 points (17 goals, 31 assists) in 44 games and has posted a team-best +20 rating. Kopitar, 20, is the Kings' leading scorer with 40 points (17 goals, 23 assists) in 44 games, while Stastny, 22, paces the Avalanche with 44 points (15 goals, 29 assists) in 43 contests. Each will be making his All-Star Game debut.

Four other players added to the Western Conference roster will be making their first All-Star Game appearance: goaltender Manny Legace of the St. Louis Blues, defenseman Duncan Keith of the Chicago Blackhawks and forwards Shawn Horcoff of the Edmonton Oilers and Henrik Sedin of the Vancouver Canucks.

Joining Legace in the Western Conference net is goaltender Chris Osgood of the Detroit Red Wings, who will be making his second career All-Star appearance and first since 1996. Osgood has posted a 19-2-1 record, leads all goaltenders with a 1.68 goals-against average and ranks second in save percentage at .932.

Rounding out the goaltending corps is Evgeni Nabokov of the San Jose Sharks, selected to his second career All-Star Game. Nabokov, the only NHL goaltender to have appeared in each of his club's games this season, leads the NHL in victories (23-12-6) and ranks fourth in goals-against average (2.01) and shutouts (five) in 41 appearances.

Others named to the Western Conference roster are defenseman Ed Jovanovski of the Phoenix Coyotes, Chris Pronger of the Ducks and Sergei Zubov of the Dallas Stars; and forwards Jason Arnott of the Nashville Predators, Marian Gaborik of the Minnesota Wild, Rick Nash of the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Sharks' Joe Thornton.

The roster additions were selected by the NHL’s Hockey Operations Department, after consultation with League General Managers.

The players selected join the five players voted by fans to the starting lineup: forwards Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk and defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom of the Red Wings, and forward Jarome Iginla and defenseman Dion Phaneuf of the Calgary Flames. Vancouver Canucks goaltender Roberto Luongo, also voted to the starting lineup in fan balloting, will not play.

LUONGO BOWS OUT OF ALL-STAR GAME

Vancouver Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo announced Wednesday that he'll skip the Jan. 27 NHL all-star game in Atlanta to be with his pregnant wife.

"I struggled with this decision," said Luongo, who fans voted in as the starting netminder for the Western Conference. "But I think family right now is more important to me and this is a good opportunity for me to spend some with my wife and the baby."

Luongo was in line to start for the West for the second year in a row. But his wife, Gina, has experienced minor complications with her pregnancy, and Luongo wished to spend time with her at their home in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

"The league was very understanding," Luongo said. "I appreciate the fact that they understood my situation and they respected that. Obviously I look forward to playing in many more all-star games and hopefully this won't affect any future all-star games."

With the Canucks' permission, Luongo will also miss Vancouver's first game after the all-star break on Jan. 29 at home against Dallas. The Canucks then travel to Florida, where Luongo will join up with the club for games against the Tampa Bay Lightning, on Jan. 31, and the Florida Panthers, on Feb. 1.

A finalist for the Vezina and Hart trophies last season, Luongo is enjoying another stellar campaign for Vancouver, ranking in the league's top four in wins (20), shutouts (six), goals-against average (1.96) and save percentage (.930).

Luongo's 263,221 votes were the most among Western Conference goalies, ahead of the 180,381 garnered by Columbus's Pascal Leclaire, the NHL leader with seven shutouts.

The league will announce the remainder of the Western Conference all-stars on Thursday.

NUMMINEN UNLIKELY TO RETURN THIS SEASON

Buffalo Sabres defenceman Teppo Numminen will need at least two more months to recover from open-heart surgery, likely ending his season.

Numminen, 39, was told Wednesday by Sabres doctors that his heart is fine, but he requires more time for his sternum to heal.
Numminen's doctors made their recommendations after examining test results from a recent checkup, and consulting with doctors at the Cleveland Clinic, where he had the operation last September.

Numminen has experienced heart murmurs since childhood and was diagnosed with a dilated aorta nearly four years ago. He avoided surgery until doctors noticed a faulty valve in his heart during a routine checkup prior to training camp.

Numminen, who makes $2.6 million, has compiled 115 goals and 505 assists for 620 points in 1,314 games over 18 NHL seasons with the Winnipeg Jets, Phoenix Coyotes and Sabres. He was drafted in the second round (29th overall) by Winnipeg in 1986.

MUCKLER INTERESTED IN RETURNING TO NHL

In an interview with the Canadian Press on Wednesday, former Ottawa Senators General Manager John Muckler said he would welcome another crack at an NHL GM job.

Muckler said in the interview that, "I'm doing very well, everything is fine and life is great", but after nearly 60 years in hockey he misses it, "I was in the game all my life. I started in 1949. It's something I've done all my life. And it was a great life and a great ride. I still have the passion for the game". When asked if working in the NHL again would make him happy, he responded "If I get back in, yes it would make me happy, there's no question about it. But if I don't, I'll just go on with my life."

After five seasons at the helm of the Senators, Muckler was let go following a trip to the Stanley Cup final last June. Owner Eugene Melnyk promoted Bryan Murray from head coach to GM.

Muckler also coached in Edmonton (during the Oilers' glory years in the 80's), Buffalo (where he also served as GM), and with the New York Rangers, but said he hasn't approached any NHL teams about a job, and still watches a ton of hockey on "The Centre Ice Package".

'CANES TAKE A CHANCE ON SAMSONOV

The Carolina Hurricanes claimed forward Sergi Samsonov off re-entry waivers from the Chicago Blackhawks.

The 29 year-old has appeared in 23 of Chicago's games without scoring a goal. He has four assists, and a minus-seven plus-minus rating. He was acquired last just from Montreal for Jassen Cullimore and Tony Salmelainen.

Samsonov is under contract for $3.525 million this season and can become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

With the move, the Blackhawks are responsible for half of Samsonov's remaining salary - about $800,000 for the balance of this season that counts against the cap. Carolina is responsible for the other half.

He was the eighth player selected in the 1997 entry draft by Boston and won the Calder Trophy in the 1997-98 season when he scored 22 goals and added 25 assists in 81 games.

He made the all-star team as a Bruin in 2000-01 when he racked up a career-best 75 points, including 29 goals.
His career started a downward spiral when he signed with the Montreal Canadiens as a free agent in the summer of 2006. He had just nine goals and 17 assists in 63 games with Montreal and was a healthy scratch for 18 games in 2006-07. He was in the press box for the last 13 games of the season, after he publicly questioned whether he made the right move in signing with the Canadiens.

SHARKS RECALL GREISS

The San Jose Sharks recalled goalie Thomas Greiss on Tuesday to fill the thankless job of Evgeni Nabokov's backup.
Nabokov has started all 41 of the Sharks' games this season. Dimitri Patzoid, who was sent back to Worcester to get some playing time, has played just 44 minutes during three games this season.

Nabokov's 41 straight starts are the fourth-most consecutive games started in a single season since 1989-90, according to Stats LLC. If Nabokov starts the Sharks' next three games, he'll tie Martin Brodeur for the second-most in that time period, trailing only Grant Fuhr's 76 consecutive starts for St. Louis in 1995-96.

Greiss was 12-10-1 with a 3.03 goals-against average in Worcester. The German goalie was recalled for a one-week practice stint with San Jose in November, but has yet to appear in an NHL game.

CHELIOS 2ND OLDEST NHL'ER

It was old-timers night for the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday when they hosted the Colorado Avalanche. Dominik Hasek made 19 saves for his second consecutive shutout, and 79th of his career, and Chris Chelios became the second-oldest player to appear in a NHL game in the Wings 1-0 win over the Av's.

Hasek, who'll turn 43 on Jan 29, has a 134-minute, 13-second scoreless streak.

Chelios, at 45 years, 348 days passed Moe Roberts to become the second oldest player in NHL history. Roberts played for the Chicago Blackhawks on Nov 25, 1951 at 45 years, 347 days. Only Gordie Howe played at an older age then Chelios, and listed below are the five oldest players to appear in a regular-season NHL game.

LEGACE, HUSELIUS,CONKLIN NAMED 3 STARS

St. Louis Blues goaltender Manny Legace, Calgary Flames left wing Kristian Huselius and Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Ty Conklin have been named the NHL's 'Three Stars' for the week ending January 6.

First Star -- Manny Legace, G, St. Louis Blues

Legace posted two shutouts in three appearances, helping the Blues (20-14-5, 45 points) move within two points of the eighth and final playoff spot in the tight Western Conference standings. Legace made 31 saves in recording his second shutout of the season, a 2-0 victory over the Detroit Red Wings Dec. 31. He made three saves in the first period before leaving the game due to illness in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Edmonton Oilers Jan. 2 and closed the week by recording the 21st shutout of his NHL career, making 27 saves in a 1-0 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes Jan. 5. Legace has posted a 15-10-2 record with a 2.09 goals-against average, .921 save percentage and three shutouts in 29 games this season.

Second Star -- Kristian Huselius, LW, Calgary Flames

Huselius led all NHL scorers with nine points (four goals, five assists) and recorded points in each game as the Flames (22-14-7, 51 points) went 4-0-0 and took the Northwest Division lead. Huselius began the week with the game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory over the Vancouver Canucks Dec. 31 and notched his second consecutive game-winner and three assists in a 4-3 victory over the New York Rangers Jan. 2. He recorded one assist in a 3-2 overtime win over the San Jose Sharks Jan. 3 and he finished the week with three points (two goals, one assist) in a 6-4 victory over the Los Angeles Kings Jan. 5. Huselius ranks
second on the Flames in scoring and 13th in the NHL with 47 points (20 goals, 27 assists) in 43 games.

Third Star -- Ty Conklin, G, Pittsburgh Penguins

Conklin posted a 3-0-0 record, 0.97 goals-against average, .972 save percentage and one shutout as the Penguins (23-16-2, 48 points) won all three games. Conklin began the week by stopping 36 of 37 shots and two of three shootout attempts as the Penguins defeated the Buffalo Sabres 2-1 in the AMP Energy NHL Winter Classic, played outdoors at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Buffalo Jan. 1. He made 33 saves in a 6-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs Jan. 3 and stopped all 35 shots for his second shutout of the season in a 3-0 victory over the Florida Panthers Jan. 5. Conklin has posted a record of 7-0-0 with a 2.00
goals-against average, .939 save percentage and two shutouts in eight appearances for Pittsburgh this season.

STARS EXTEND RIBEIRO FOR $25-MILLION

Dallas Stars forward Mike Ribeiro was rewarded Monday with a five-year contract extension worth $25 million.
Ribeiro, who is making $1.8 million this season, was slated to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. He leads the Stars with 21 goals on just 58 shots and 46 points in 41 games this season.

The 27 year-old has racked up 39 goals and 103 points in 121 games since the Stars acquired him and a sixth-round draft pick from the Montreal Canadiens for Janne Niinimaa and a fifth-round pick on Sept. 30, 2006, and has posted 89 goals and 256 points in 397 games since being selected by the Canadiens in the second round (45th overall) in the 1998 NHL draft.

TORRES OUT FOR REST OF SEASON

The usually durable Raffi Torres will miss the second half of the NHL season with a torn knee ligament. The fourth-year Edmonton Oilers left-winger will undergo surgery to repair his anterior cruciate ligament that was damaged in a Dec. 13 game in Detroit.

Torres hasn't played since suffering the injury, and entering this season, he had missed only two games in three previous campaigns with the Oilers.

The six-foot, 216-pounder has five goals and 11 points in 32 games this season.

DOWNIE WON'T BE SUSPENDED

NHL disciplinarian Colin Campbell spoke with rookie forward Steve Downie, but decided not to hit the Flyers forward with a ban for sucker-punching Toronto Maple Leafs forward Jason Blake.

Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said he and Downie spoke to Campbell after the incident in Philadelphia's 3-2 win in Toronto on Saturday night.
Downie punched Blake in the eye while the veteran forward was being held by a linesman.

This is not the first time this season Downie has caused controversy with his questionable actions on the ice.

He was slapped with a 20-game suspension after he left his feet and hit Dean McAmmond of the Ottawa Senators in the head during a pre-season game in September.

At the time, Downie was trying to crack the Philadelphia lineup in his first pro season, having been drafted by the club in the first round of the 2005 NHL entry draft.

MASON JOINS JACKETS AFTER WINNING GOLD

It's been quite a week for NHL prospect Steve Mason, who was summoned by the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday, just two days after leading Canada to a gold medal at the world junior hockey championship.

Mason, who stopped 26 shots in a 3-2 overtime win over Sweden in Saturday's gold-medal game in the Czech Republic, was recalled from the Ontario Hockey League as an emergency replacement.

Blue Jackets starting goaltender Pascal Leclaire left Saturday's game at San Jose after the second period due to illness and won't be available for Tuesday's contest against the hometown St. Louis Blues.

At the world juniors, Mason assumed the No. 1 job from Jonathan Bernier to start the medal round and led the Canadians to three straight wins, culminating in Saturday's fourth consecutive gold.

After the game, the 19-year-old was named the tournament's most valuable player and top goaltender as well as earning a spot on the all-star team.

Mason finished the tourney with a 5-0-0 record, 1.19 goals-against average and .951 save percentage in five games.
Prior to Friday's semifinal victory over the United States he was traded by the OHL's London Knights to the Kitchener Rangers.

Mason broke training camp with Columbus in October after going 1-2-0 with a 1.78 GAA in three pre-season games. He was assigned to the Knights on Oct. 9.

Taken 69th overall by Columbus in the 2006 NHL draft, Mason had a 19-4-3 record with a 2.79 GAA and two shutouts in 26 games this season for London.

He was named the OHL's goaltender of the year in 2006-07 after going 45-13-4 with a 3.20 GAA, .914 save percentage and two shutouts in 62 games.

NHL INVESTIGATES DOWNIE'S PUNCH ON BLAKE

Playing in just his fourth NHL game since serving a 20-game suspension for a pre-season hit on Ottawa's Dean McAmmond, Philadelphia Flyers forward Steve Downie hit Toronto winger Jason Blake - who was being held by an official - in the face with what replays looked like a possible sucker-punch over the weekend.

Blake didn't sustain any structural damage to his eye, but the hit left him with a golf ball-sized welt under his left eye, and as a precaution didn't return in Saturday's game.

While Downie received a minor penalty for the punch, the NHL is investigating the incident, which is the latest for a Flyers team that has been hit with 52 games in suspensions this season.

So far this season, the Flyers have had five players punished for on-ice acts of violence.

Downie got 20 games for a head shot on McAmmond in the pre-season, Jesse Boulerice got 25 games for a crosscheck to the head of Vancouver's Ryan Kesler, defenceman Randy Jones got two games for a hit from behind on Boston's Patrice Bergeron, forward Scott Hartnell got two games for hitting Boston's Andrew Alberts' head into the boards when the player was on his knees and defenceless, and Riley Cote took a three-game suspension for a high head-shot on Stars defenceman Matt Niskanen.
