PENS LARAQUE SUSPENDED FOR 3 GAMES

Pittsburgh Penguins' forward Georges Laraque has been suspended for three games, without pay, as a result of an elbowing incident on March 12.

Laraque was assessed a major penalty and a game misconduct at 2:34 of the second period for an elbow to the head area of Buffalo player Nathan Paetsch.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and based on his average annual salary, Laraque will forfeit $20,855.61. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund. He is eligible to return March 22 against New Jersey.

HAVLAT HAS SEASON-ENDING SURGERY

Chicago Blackhawks forward Martin Havlat underwent season-ending shoulder surgery on Thursday.

The 26-year-old was hurt in Chicago's season-opening 1-0 loss to the Minnesota Wild and missed 22 games before returning Nov 28. He reinjured the shoulder in a 1-0 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes on Feb 27.

Havlat posted 10 goals and 17 assists for 27 points in 35 games this season, his second with Chicago.

The former all-star has totalled 140 goals and 319 points in 389 games since he was taken 26th overall by the Ottawa Senators in the 1999 NHL Draft.

Havlat was dealt by the Senators to the Blackhawks in a three-way trade involving the San Jose Sharks on July 9, 2006.

NO NHL DISCIPLINE FOR PRONGER'S STOMP

Anaheim Ducks defenceman Chris Pronger won't face any disciplinary action from the National Hockey League for stomping on Vancouver Canucks center Ryan Kesler on Wednesday night.

The incident happened in the opening minute of the second period in Anaheim's zone after a dump in from the blue line by Canucks defenceman Sami Salo.

Kesler - one of two Canuck forwards who chased down the puck behind the goal line - collided with Pronger along the boards and fell, and the Ducks captain appeared to deliberately step on him. Kesler did not suffer any injuries from after the incident.

"He stomped on me," Kesler told reporters after the game. "He got me on the calf."

It isn't the first time the former Norris and Hart Trophy winner has been involved in such incidents.

Pronger received a one-game suspension from the NHL last May for his hit on Detroit Red Wings forward Tomas Holmstrom in Game 3 of the Western Conference final, and was suspended for a game in June for hitting Ottawa's Dean McAmmond n the head with his forearm during the third period of the Senators' 5-3 win in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup final.

It also marks the second time this season that a player has stepped on an opponent while he was laying prone.

In December, New York Islanders forward Chris Simon received a 30-game suspension for trying to step on Pittsburgh forward Jarkko Ruutu's foot.

WINGS DRAPER OUT WITH GROIN TEAR

Detroit Red Wings forward Kris Draper will be sidelined for the next several days with a small tear in his groin.

Draper was first bothered by the injury after Detroit's game in Vancouver February 23. In 61 games this season, Draper has posted nine goals and eight assists.

With injuries to forwards Draper, Tomas Holmstrom and Dan Cleary, the Red Wings recalled center Darren Helm from Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League.

The Red Wings also recalled goalie Jimmy Howard from Grand Rapids. With Dominik Hasek nursing a sore lower back, Howard will serve as the backup to starter Chris Osgood.

KNEE SURGERY TO END OHLUND'S SEASON

The Vancouver Canucks will have to play out the regular season without one of their key defenceman.

Mattias Ohlund didn't accompany the team on its trip to Phoenix and has flown back to Vancouver to undergo surgery Thursday to remove bone chips in his knee.

The bone chips caused swelling and Ohlund was playing through it and was treating it with anti-inflammatory drugs.

The Canucks blue-liner experienced bone chips in the 2002-03 season when he missed a total of 22 games. He was able to return to play 13 playoff games that year, recording three goals, four assists, and a total of twelve penalty minutes.

In 52 games this season with Vancouver, Ohlund has nine goals and 15 assists while picking up 79 minutes in penalties. The Canucks sit in eighth place in the Western Conference, two points ahead of the Nashville Predators

BISHOP SIGNS WITH BLUES

University of Maine goalie Ben Bishop signed with his hometown St. Louis Blues and will forgo his senior season.

The university said Bishop, selected by the Blues in the third round of the 2005 NHL draft, signed with St. Louis on Tuesday night. He will play with Peoria of the AHL for the rest of the season.

Bishop, of Des Peres, Mo., went 55-35-7 with a 2.29 goals-against average and a .917 save percentage during his career with Maine.

SUSPENSION POSSIBLE FOR DUCKS PRONGER

Anaheim Ducks defenceman Chris Pronger could face disciplinary action from the NHL after stomping on Vancouver Canucks center Ryan Kesler on Wednesday night.

There is no word yet on whether the Canucks have contacted the league or sent in video evidence from the game.

It isn't the first time the former Norris and Hart Trophy winner has been involved in such incidents.

Pronger received a one-game suspension from the NHL last may for his hit on Detroit Red Wings forward Tomas Holmstrom in Game 3 of the Western Conference final, and was suspended for a game in June for hitting Ottawa's Dean McAmmond in the head with his forearm during the third period of the Senators' 5-3 win in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup final.

PENS TO PLAY EXHIBITION AGAINST FINNISH CLUB

The National Hockey League (NHL) and the National Hockey League Players’ Association (NHLPA) announced that the Pittsburgh Penguins will play an exhibition game against Jokerit of the SM-Liiga, the top professional hockey league in Finland, on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008 at Hartwall Arena in Helsinki, Finland.

The Penguins will be in Europe preparing for their NHL regular-season games against the Ottawa Senators in Stockholm, Sweden on Saturday Oct. 4 and Sunday Oct. 5 as part NHL Premiere 2008.

"The entire Pittsburgh Penguins organization is excited about the prospect of playing against Jokerit in Helsinki,” said Ray Shero, executive VP and general manager of the Penguins. “We are looking forward to bringing NHL hockey to Sweden and Finland, which are great hockey countries, and we hope that fans from all over Europe enjoy the international competition.”

Along with the games in Stockholm, the NHL will host regular-season games in Prague Oct. 4-5 when the New York Rangers and Tampa Bay Lightning play two games at O2 Arena. It will be the first time two NHL games will be played in Europe on the same day. The League in 2007 played its first-ever regular-season games in Europe when the Stanley Cup champion Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Kings played a two-game series in London. Previously, the NHL hosted three successful Game One events in Japan in 1997, 1998 and 2000.

If you happen to have travel plans to Helsinki, Finland around October 2, tickets for the exhibition game go on sale April 1.

CROSBY, TALBOT SIT OUT PENS 7-3 WIN OVER BUFFALO

After experiencing pain in his right ankle during the morning skate, Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby decided to sit out last night's game against the Buffalo Sabres.

Crosby has only recently returned from a 21-game absence because of a sprain in the same ankle. Since his return, he has collected four points in three games, including a two-goal performance in Sunday's 4-2 win in Washington.

"That game itself was pretty physical," Crosby said. "It's probably a combination of that and it's been sore the past couple of days."

The Penguins next play Sunday at home against Philadelphia. When asked if he hopes to be in that game, Crosby said, "That's what I'm planning on."

Last season's MVP, Crosby has 22 goals and 67 points in 49 games this season.

Forward Maxime Talbot also sat out last nights blowout win over Buffalo after aggravating the high ankle sprain he suffered earlier this season.

That same injury caused goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury to miss almost three months this season.

NASH NAMED JACKETS CAPTAIN

Rick Nash is the new captain of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

The 23-year-old winger was named to the role Wednesday, replacing recently traded veteran defenceman Adam Foote.

Nash becomes the fifth captain in team history, following Lyle Odelein, Ray Whitney, Luke Richardson and Foote, who was dealt to the Colorado Avalanche on Feb. 26.

An alternate captain since 2005-06, Nash will wear the "C" for the first time on Friday, when the Blue Jackets host the Chicago Blackhawks.

Nash, the first overall pick in the 2002 draft, leads the Blue Jackets in goals (35) and points (a career-high 58) this season, his fifth in the NHL.

With 12 games remaining this regular season, Nash has a chance to surpass his career best of 41 goals set in his 2003-04 sophomore season.

WINGS SIGN CLEARY TO FIVE-YEAR EXTENSION

The Detroit Red Wings signed right winger Dan Cleary to a five-year contract.

Out with a broken jaw since Feb. 9, Cleary has matched his career high with 20 goals and 40 points in 57 games this season.

He has 84 career goals and 123 assists in 534 games for Chicago, Edmonton, Phoenix and Detroit, and made his NHL debut with the Blackhawks during the 1997-98 season.

Detroit signed Cleary as a free agent in 2005, and he had three goals and 12 assists in his first season as a fourth-line role player. Last season he scored a career high 20 goals and registered 20 assists.

SABRES DEPLEATED BY INJURIES TO SPACEK, KALININ

Jaroslav Spacek could miss the rest of the regular season, and Dmitri Kalinin will be out for weeks, leaving the Buffalo Sabres without two veteran defencemen for their final playoff push.

Spacek has a chest injury and will require more tests to determine when he could return, but coach Lindy Ruff said Tuesday, "It's going to be a good period of time." He leads the Sabres blue-liners with nine goals and 31 points and is averaging a little over 23 minutes of ice time a game.

As for Kalinin, Ruff said he'll miss up to two weeks with a shoulder injury.

Both were hurt during the Sabres 3-2 shootout loss to the Rangers on Monday.

Buffalo did get some good news, as defenceman Henrik Tallinder, who's missed three games with a shoulder injury, is expected to return for the Sabres game at Pittsburgh Wednesday night.

With the injury's Buffalo recalled defenceman Mike Weber from AHL Rochester. He has no points in four games with the Sabres this season, and hasn't been with the team since early November.

HUGHSON STAYING WITH CBC SPORTS

CBC Sports announced that it has re-signed announcer Jim Hughson to a six-year contract. The new deal goes into effect immediately and runs through the end of the 2013-14 NHL season.

Hughson will continue to work on Hockey Night in Canada, along with CBC's broadcasts of Toronto Blue Jays baseball.

A broadcast veteran of 29 years, Hughson started his NHL broadcasting career in October 1979, is a five-time Gemini Award winner (Canada's version of the Emmy) and in 2004 was named the best sports play-by-play announcer.

For those of you who have the NHL Centre Ice Package, it's always a treat to listen to a Hughson called game. I can't tell you the number of times I fell asleep listening to him call a Canucks/Oilers game, and Hockey Night in Canada wouldn't be the same without him. I'm glad that CBC locked up one of the best hockey play-by-play men and it's too bad that most of the American audience doesn't know who he is and how entertaining it is to listen to a Hughson broadcast, especially when it's in Cal-gary and you have the horns going in the backround.

Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin, New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur and San Jose Sharks center Joe Thornton have been named the NHL's 'Three Stars' for the week ending March 9.

First Star -- Alex Ovechkin, LW, Washington Capitals

Ovechkin reached the 50-goal mark for the second time in his three NHL seasons Mar. 3, scoring a hat trick and adding two assists in Washington's 10-2 victory over the Boston Bruins. He reached the milestone in his team's 67th game of the season, the fastest since the Pittsburgh Penguins' Jaromir Jagr and Mario Lemieux (59th game) and the Buffalo Sabres' Alexander Mogilny (63rd game) in 1995-96. Ovechkin later scored a pair of goals in a 3-1 victory over the Sabres Mar. 5, tallied one assist in a 2-1 loss to the Bruins Mar. 8 and finished the week with two assists in a 4-2 loss to the Penguins Mar. 9. Ovechkin leads the NHL scoring race with 95 points (54-41--95) in 70 games.

Second Star -- Martin Brodeur, G, New Jersey Devils

Brodeur posted a 3-0-0 record with a 0.98 goals-against average and .972 save percentage as the Devils (40-23-6, 86 points) moved into first place in the Eastern Conference. He stopped 41 of 42 shots in a 4-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs Mar. 4, made 21 saves in a 2-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning Mar. 7 and closed the week with a 42-save effort in a 2-1 victory over Toronto Mar. 8. Brodeur ranks second among NHL goaltenders with 38 victories and is among the League leaders in goals-against average (third, 2.12) and save percentage (second, .922). He is two victories shy of posting his NHL-record seventh 40-win season and becoming the first goaltender in League history to post three consecutive 40-win campaigns.

Third Star -- Joe Thornton, C, San Jose Sharks

Thornton finished second among NHL scorers with seven points (two goals, five assists) and posted a +6 rating in four games as the Sharks extended their winning streak to a franchise-record nine games. He notched a season-high four points (two goals, two assists) in a 6-4 victory over the Montreal Canadiens Mar. 3, recorded one assist in a 3-2 overtime win over the Ottawa Senators Mar. 5 and tallied two assists in a 3-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks Mar. 7. Thornton ranks fourth in the NHL scoring with 81 points (19 goals, 62 assists) and is tied for the League lead in assists with Boston's Marc Savard. The Sharks (40-21-8, 88 points) are second in the Pacific Division, trailing the Dallas Stars by one point with three games in hand.

FINE EXPECTED FOR RANGERS' AVERY

It's expected the NHL will fine Seam Avery of the New York Rangers for his water-bottle tossing episode on Sunday against the Boston Bruins.

It's doesn't appear a suspension will be handed down, but it would be difficult for the league to do nothing since the contents of the water bottle ended up on some of the paying customers.

The New York Post reported that Avery tossed two water bottles from the penalty box in frustration, just missing three kinds in the crowd, and soaking some people after one of the bottles smashed against a wall.

The father of two of the kids expressed his displeasure from behind the glass.

Avery later sought the family out and cooled things off by offering a hockey stick, which was accepted. A Rangers spokesperson told the Post that the family was satisfied with the response.

YANKEE STADIUM TO HOST WINTER CLASSIC

According to a report in the New York Daily News, the National Hockey League is looking into playing an outdoor game at Yankee Stadium in 2009.

"It's something we've spoken to the Yankees and the city about," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told the paper. "But it's not a done deal. There are still other possibilities and a lot of moving pieces."

Yankee Stadium is scheduled to be demolished after the upcoming baseball season but could remain open long enough to host a New York Rangers regular season game, making hockey the last event at the ballpark.

BELANGER OUT WITH BROKEN TOE

Minnesota Wild center Eric Belanger will be out of the lineup for a while. He has a broken big toe on his right foot, and is wearing a medical boot.

No timetable has been given for Belanger's return.

The Wild called up Steve Kelly from AHL Houston to take his place, who played in his first NHL game Sunday since 2003-04.

Kelly played just 3 minutes, 10 seconds on a line mostly with Aaron Voros and Todd Fedoruk in the Wild's 3-2 shoot-out loss to San Jose.

Also on the Wild injury front, defenseman Petteri Nummelin contuines to be sidelined by a deep muscle bruise. Chris Simon, Sean Hill and Matt Foy were healthy scratches Sunday against the Sharks.

Assistant coach Mike Ramsey, still recovering from eye surgery, was back on the bench for the first time since Feb. 14.

YANKEE STADIUM TO HOST WINTER CLASSIC SEQUEL?

According to Scott Morrison, on CBC's Hockey Night in Canada's Hotstove segment, two of the wotld's most famous ballparks could be in the running to host hockey's next outdoor extravaganza.

Yankee Stadium in New York is at the top of the list of possible sites if the NHL decides to hold a sequel to the wildly popular New Year's Day Winter Classic in Buffalo.

Chicago's Wrigley Field, home of the Cubs, is also on the short list.

"The NHL insists that they have not narrowed it that far down," Morrison said, "After the success in Buffalo, the Yankees, who didn't want any part of it a year ago, came back and said 'Hey, let's think about this. I've also heard the NHL is going in [to Yankee Stadium] to do a site survey, so that would suggest there's more than just a passing interest."

The NHL earned rave reviews for its Jan. 1 game at Ralph Wilson Stadium, where the Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Buffalo Sabres 2-1 on Sidney Crosby's shootout goal, in front of an estimated crowd of 72,000 which drew robust TV ratings in both the U.S and Canada.

The success of the event was not lost on other top leagues, and the NBA announced in February that it will stage an outdoor exhibition game between the Phoenix Suns and Denver Nuggets on Oct. 11 at California's Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

If an outdoor NHL game was held at Yankee Stadium on New Year's Day 2009, it could be the final sporting event held at the 85-year-old Bronx venue.

The Yankees will play their final regular-season game there on Sept. 21, and are moving into a new ballpark on adjacent land for the 2009 season, Most of the old Yankee Stadium is slated to be demolished and converted into parkland

DUCKS PERRY OUT FOR SIX WEEKS

Anaheim Ducks winger Corey Perry suffered a deep laceration right on his right quad tendon and is expected to be sidelined for at least six weeks. The playoffs begin in 4 and a half weeks, and the loss of Perry will have a great impact on their first round playoff lineup.

Perry underwent successful surgery to repair the tendon, and is expected to be released from the hospital today.

He was driving to the net in Thursday's game against the Colorado Avalanche when Avs goaltender Jose Theodore's skate accidentally hit him in the leg, cutting into the muscle and tendons.

Bobby Ryan was called up from the Ducks' minor league affiliate in Portland to take Perry's spot in the lineup.

This season, Perry is second on the Ducks in scoring with 29 goals and 25 assists for 54 points.
