KHABIBULIN OUT WITH SPRAINED KNEE

The Chicago Blackhawks will have to make due without Nikolai Khabibulin as the goaltender sprained his knee in Chicago's 7-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets, but it's not known how long he'll be sidelined.

The Blackhawks recalled goalie Corey Crawford from their AHL affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs on Thursday. He has appeared in 44 games at Rockford with a record of 24-13-5 with two shutouts, a 2.72 goals-against-average and .911 save percentage.

Craeford played in two NHL games for the 'Hawks, both during 2005-06. He was Chicago's second-round pick (52nd overall) in the 2003 entry draft.

Also on Thursday, the Blackhawks assigned forward Jack Skille to Rockford.

ZEDNIK MAY BE DISCHARGED SATURDAY

Flordia Panthers forward Richard Zednik, recovering from a serious neck gash, could be released from a Buffalo hospital by Saturday.

Zednik, who almost had his carotid artery severed in a game against the Sabres last Sunday, is showing significant improvement, said Dr. Sonya Noor on Thursday.

Noor performed emergency surgery after Zednik's neck was cut open in the third period when teammate Olli Jokinen was upended and his right foot skate went into Zednik's path.

Moments later, Zednik kneeled forward with his hands at his throat, blood coming from his neck. He made his way to the bench, where trainers and teammates helped him.

Zednik lost five units of blood in the gruesome accident, but was upgraded to good condition on Wednesday.

Zednik's condition has improved so much that Noor granted a special treat — Buffalo's famed chicken wings.

"He asked if he could eat Buffalo chicken wings," Noor said. "So we let him." A restaurant donated wings and pizza for Zednik, his wife and nurses at Buffalo General Hospital."

The Panthers forward is expected to miss the remainder of the season.

BRUINS' WARD RELEASED FROM HOSPITAL

Boston Bruins defenceman Aaron Ward was released from a Pittsburgh hospital Thursday, following a neck injury he sustained in the Bruins 2-1 win over the Penguins.

The 35-year-old was accidentally struck in the throat by Penguins defenceman Sergei Gonchar when he raised his stick. Ward wasn't bleeding, but had to be helped from the ice.

Boston coach Claude Julien later said Ward was coughing up blood in the locker room.

Bruins' spokesman Matt Chmura said there's no word on if Ward would miss any playing time.

Playing in his 11th NHL season, Ward has nine points in 44 games this year and is second to Dennis Wideman among Bruins defenceman with a plus-9 rating.

The New York Rangers and goaltender Henrik Lundqvist have agreed on a new six-year contract.

Lundqvist will earn $6.875 million per year for a total of $41.25 million over six years with a limited no-trade clause that would commence in the 2009-10 season.

The Rangers and Lundqvist have been working on a deal since the start of this year, as the 25-year-old was scheduled to become a restricted free-agent on July 1.

MOVIE PRODUCER SET TO PURCHASE LIGHTNING

The Tampa Bay Lightning may soon have some new owners who will bring a Hollywood feel to the franchise.

The team, owned by Michigan-based Palace Sports & Entertainment since 1999, announced Wednesday that it has been sold to OK Hockey LLC, a group controlled by Los Angeles TV and movie producer Oren Koules.

Koules was part of a group of bidders who tried to purchase the team last year, but the deal unravelled before it was approved by the NHL. The league still has to approve this deal, which is expected to be completed in 3 1/2 months.

The deal also includes the leasehold rights to the St. Pete Times Forum and approximately 5 1/2 acres of land near the arena.

The Lightning, who won the Stanley Cup in 2004, are last in the Eastern Conference. The team made the playoff the past two seasons, but were eliminated both times in the first round.

ZEDNIK'S CONDITION UPGRADED TO GOOD

While the Florida Panthers returned back to the sunshine state, teammate Richard Zednik remained in a Buffalo hospital where his condition was upgraded to good.

The hockey world is still reeling from the incident, which could have killed the 32-year-old winger if not for life-saving treatment at HSBC Arena and Buffalo General Hospital that reconnected his carotid artery, which supplies the head and neck with blood.

Zednik's neck was cut open in the third period of this past weekends game against the Buffalo Sabres after teammate Olli Jokinen was upended and his right foot skate went into Zednik's path. Moments later, he kneeled forward with his hands at his throat, blood coming from his neck and made his wat to the bench where trainers and teammates helped him.

The 7 1/2-sentimetre laceration barley missed Zednik's jugular vein, which takes blood from the brain, but cut his carotid artery. He remained conscious throughout the incident, even as he lost five units of blood.

In the end, doctors said the only effect would be some "hoarseness."

Zednik suffered no long-term brain or nerve damage, and could be discharged as early as this weekend, though he will have to sit out the rest of the season.

The Panthers called up forward Rob Globke from the Rochester Americans of the AHL to replace Zednik.

SOURAY DONE FOR SEASON

Sheldon Souray's name has been added to the growing list of Edmonton Oilers who have been sidelined for the rest of the season.

The Oilers defenceman revealed Tuesday that he is done for the remainder of the 2007-08 NHL season after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder last week.

Souray joins left-winger Raffi Torres (torn knee ligament) and center Shawn Horcoff (left shoulder) who were recently ruled out for the rest of the season for Edmonton.

Souray tried playing through the pain, but ended up aggravating the joint. He suffered the original injury, a second-degree sprain, last October 13 in a 4-1 loss to the Vancouver Canucks, and has missed a total of 29 games this season.

After joining the Oilers as a free agent in the off-season, signing a five-year $27-million contract, Souray had three goals and seven assists in 26 games this season.

SENS RETURN FOLIGNO TO AHL

Ottawa Senators forward Nick Foligno is headed back to the AHL, again.

The rookie was assigned Tuesday to the Binghamton Senators, ending his third NHL stint in four months.

The 20-year-old opened the season in Ottawa, scoring twice with six penalty minutes in 14 games before being sent down to the minor leagues last November 14.

Foligno returned 13 days later, and posted three goals and five points in 17 games before being demoted to Binghamton on January 4.

He had one goal and one assist for two points in six NHL games since being recalled January 29.

Foligno, the son of former NHLer Mike Foligno, was drafted 28th overall by Ottawa in 2006.

FERGUSON JOINS TSN AS HOCKEY ANALYST

Former Toronto Maple Leafs General Manager John Ferguson Jr has joined TSN as a guest analyst.

For those of you who have the NHL Centre Ice Package, look for Ferguson during TSN broadcasts as he'll be making three guest appearances in the coming weeks.

Ferguson became the 12th general manager in Toronto Maple Leafs history when he took over from Pat Quinn in 2003. He spent five seasons with the Leafs and was also a member of Team Canada's management team at the 2007 IIHF World Championship in Russia, where Canada went undefated and won gold. Ferguson was relieved of his duties by the Leafs in January and was replaced by interim GM Cliff Fletcher. He is now a scout for Team Canada's entry in the upcoming 2008 IIHF World Championship in Halifax and Quebec City.

February 12th Part II

TWINS SIGN VETERAN HERNANDEZ

The Twins and right-hander Livan Hernandez have agreed to a one-year contract worth $5 million in base salary.

According to MLB.com, the contract will include performance-based incentives that could raise its value to $7 million, which is the amount Hernandez earned last season with the Diamondbacks.

Hernandez, who turns 33 on Feb. 20, was considered to be one of the top free-agent pitchers still available on the market. He was 11-11 with a 4.93 ERA last season with Arizona.

Before signing Hernandez, the Twins' rotation was expected not to feature a starter over the age of 26, and had lost a significant portion of its innings pitched from last season after trading Johan Santana to the Mets and losing righty Carlos Silva to free agency, as both pitchers combined for 421 innings in '07.

Despite their youthful rotation, the Twins front office had recently made it clear that they were only interested in adding a veteran pitcher if he would improve their staff. The club cited last season's free-agent acquisitions, Sidney Ponson and Ramon

Ortiz, as examples of veterans who merely delayed the arrival of some of their younger starters.

Hernandez, will give the Twins a proven workhorse. He leads the Majors in innings pitched since 2003 and has tallied at least 200 innings pitched every season since 2000. The right-hander is 134-128 lifetime with a 4.25 ERA, and is probably best known for helping pitch the Florida Marlins to the 1997 World Series title, and winning the World Series MVP.

One concern is that Hernandez has spent his entire 12-year career in the National League, pitching for Florida, San Francisco, Montreal, Washington and most recently, Arizona, and whether he will be able to adjust to the more offensively potent lineups in the American League remains to be seen.

The Twins rotation now could feature Scott Baker, Francisco Liriano, Boof Bonser, Kevin Slowey and Hernandez. Other pitchers expected to vie for spots this spring are right-handers Nick Blackburn, Phil Humber, Kevin Mulvey and Zach Day, and left-handers Glen Perkins, Brian Duensing and Randy Keisler.

SPEZZA, MALKIN, GIGUERE 'THREE STARS' OF THE WEEK

Ottawa Senators center Jason Spezza, Pittsburgh Penguins center Evgeni Malkin and Anaheim Ducks goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere have been named the NHL's 'Three Stars' for the week ending February 10.

First Star - Jason Spezza, C, Ottawa Senators

Spezza tallied 11 points (four goals, seven assists) in three games as the Senators (34-18-4, 72 points) won two of three contests and extended their Northeast Division lead to five points. Spezza recorded one goal and one assist in a 4-3 loss to the Montreal Canadiens Feb. 5, notched three assists in a 5-4 victory over the Florida Panthers Feb. 7 and posted a career-high six points (three goals, three assists) in a 6-1 victory over the Canadiens Feb. 9. Spezza ranks second on the Senators in scoring and fifth in the League overall with 71 points (23 goals, 48 assists) in 50 games.

Second Star - Evgeni Malkin, C Pittsburgh Penguins

Malkin recorded 12 points (three goals, nine assists) in four games as the Penguins posted a 3-1-0 record and moved into first place in the Atlantic Division. He tallied a goal and two assists in a 4-3 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes Feb. 4, recorded two assists in a 4-3 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers Feb. 7, notched two goals, including the game-winner, and one assist in a 4-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings Feb. 9 and had a goal and three assists in a 4-3 victory over the Flyers Feb. 10. Malkin leads the Penguins in scoring and ranks third in the NHL with 73 points (31 goals, 42 assists) in 56 games. He has recorded 8-13--21 in the 10 games since Penguins captain Sidney Crosby was sidelined with an ankle injury Jan. 18.

Third Star - Jean-Sebastien Giguere, G Anaheim Ducks

Giguere posted a 3-0-0 record with a 1.01 goals-against average, .966 save percentage and one shutout as the Ducks won four consecutive road games during their season-long, nine-game trip. Giguere turned aside 84 of 87 shots for the week, beginning with a 25-save shutout in a 3-0 victory over the New York Islanders Feb. 5. He stopped 32 of 33 shots in a 4-1 victory over the New York Rangers Feb. 7 and made 27 saves in a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings Feb. 10. Giguere improved his season record to 24-15-5 with a 2.27 goals-against average, .918 save percentage and four shutouts in 44 appearances.

STILLMAN, COMMODORE TRADED TO SENS

The Ottawa Senators added playoff experience, secondary scoring and toughness to their lineup Monday, picking up left-winger Cory Stillman and defenceman Mike Commodore from Carolina.

Stillman and Commodore, who led the Hurricanes with 74 penalty minutes this season, were members of Carolina's Stanley Cup championship team in 2006. They are both unrestricted free agents on July 1.

Forward Patrick Eaves and defenceman Joe Corvo are the newest Hurricanes, who stood three points back of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference entering Monday's action.

Carolina general manager Jim Rutherford said Stillman waived his no-trade clause to complete the deal.

Eaves will be a restricted free agent, while Corvo has two more seasons left at $2.75 million per year.

Stillman, 34, has 21 goals and 46 points in 55 games this season while earning $1.75 million. The Senators had been looking to add a top-six forward to complement leading scorers Daniel Alfredsson, Dany Heatley and Jason Spezza.

Commodore, 28, is a rugged defenceman who had 12 points in 41 games this season while earning $1.3 million.

Eaves, 23, had four goals and six assists in 26 games this season. He was sidelined 24 games earlier in the campaign with a separated right shoulder.

Corvo, 30, had 27 points (6-21) and a plus-13 rating in 51 games.

The NHL trade deadline is Feb. 26 at 3 p.m ET.

ZEDNIK STABLE AFTER LIFESAVING SURGERY

Florida Panthers forward Richard Zednik lost five units of blood, but doctors never considered his life in jeopardy after the player had his carotid artery nearly severed by a teammate's skate in a freak and frightening accident.

Zednik underwent an hour of surgery to reconnect the artery and was listed in stable condition in the intensive care unit at Buffalo General Hospital.

He was awake and cooperative with the medical staff, doctors said.

Attending surgeon Sonya Noor said there were no initial signs of brain damage, which is a fear whenever the coratid artery is clamped.

She said clamps were in place for about 15 to 20 minutes during surgery, which she considers a short time.

Zednik was sliced across the right side of the throat by teammate Olli Jokinen's skate midway through the third period of Buffalo's 5-3 victory.

Doctors said the skate blade just missed cutting the jugular vein.

The carotid artery supplies blood to the brain, while the jugular vein takes blood from the brain. Blood pressure is much higher in the carotid artery.

Sabres orthopedic surgeon Les Bisson, who attended to Zednik shortly after he got off the ice, said losing five units — about five pints — of blood was significant, but "not a lot" for this type of injury.

According to Noor, the slashed artery was "hanging by a thread."

She stressed, if the artery had been completely severed, it would have recessed into the neck, requiring even more extensive surgery.

Zednik will remain in the ICU for a few days, but it is uncertain when he will be discharged and allowed to return to Florida, Noor said.

It will be six to eight weeks before he can return to normal activity.

A 12-year NHL veteran, Zednik is in his first season with the Panthers, after signing as a free agent last summer.

After a two-month slump, he has been playing well. Zednik entered the game on a four-game point streak, in which he had six goals and three assists, giving him 26 points (15 goals, 11 assists) in 54 games this season.

HASEK INJURED

The Detroit Red Wings will have to make do without Dominik Hasek for the next little while.

Detroit revealed Monday that the veteran goaltender's status is day-to-day on account of minor inflammation of his hip flexor.

The Red Wings said Hasek is not expected to be in uniform on Tuesday night when they visit the Nashville Predators.

Hasek, who sports a 19-7-3 record, also missed three games earlier this season with a sore hip.
With Hasek out, Detroit called up goalie Jimmy Howard from their American Hockey League affiliate, Grand Rapids Griffins, on Monday.

Chris Osgood and Howard are expected to dress for Tuesday night's contest in Nashville.

Howard, who was named the AHL goaltender of the month for December, has appeared in 39 games this year for the Griffins, compiling a 17-19-2 record with a 2.61 goals-against average and a .914 save percentage.

Also on Monday, the Wings placed defenceman Niklas Kronwall on injured reserve retroactive to Jan. 30 when he suffered a shoulder sprain during the third period in a game against the Phoenix Coyotes.

GAGNE OUT WITH 3RD CONCUSSION

Simon Gagne of the Philadelphia Flyers is indefinitely sidelined after sustaining his third concussion of the season on Sunday.

The one-time all-star has already missed 30 games this year due to concussions.

Gagne sat out four games after he was hit by Jay Bouwmeester on Oct. 24, and missed a further 26 contests after a collision with Gary Roberts on Nov. 7.

Gagne's latest concussion came after a high hit by Jordan Staal during his first shift in the Flyers' 4-3 defeat in Pittsburgh on Sunday.

Team physician Dr. Gary Dorshimer examined Gagne on Monday and said he has a mild concussion.

The 27-year-old, who had complained of dizziness after previous concussions, said his symptoms were relatively light.

Gagne said his injuries were not comparable to those of former Flyers Keith Primeau and Eric Lindros, whose careers were ended by a series of concussions.

STARS EXTEND BARCH 2 YEARS

Dallas Stars enforcer Krys Barch agreed Monday to a two-year contract extension worth $1.15 million.

Barch, 27, is committed to the Stars through the 2009-10 campaign.

Barch has amassed one goal and three points with 78 penalty minutes in 34 games this season, his second in the NHL. In 26 games this season, the rookie has three goals and five points to go along with 107 penalty minutes.

ZEDNIK HAS SURGERY TO CLOSE NECK GASH

Florida Panthers forward Richard Zednik underwent surgery to close a deep gash on the right side of his neck and was in stable condition Sunday night after he was cut by a teammate's skate during a game in Buffalo.

Panthers spokesman Brian Goldman said "The surgery was successful and he's resting comfortably in the hospital"
Blood gushed from Zednik's neck after he was hurt midway through the third period of Buffalo's 5-3 victory, creating a frightening moment that delayed the game for about 15 minutes. There was also a brief discussion about postponing the game altogether.

Zednik was behind the play and skating into the right corner of the Sabres' zone, when teammate Olli Jokinen was upended by Sabres forward Clarke MacArthur. Jokinen fell head-first to the ice, and his right leg flew up and struck Zednik directly on the side of the neck.

Clutching his neck, Zednik raced to the Florida bench, leaving a long trail of blood. When he arrived, he nearly fell into the arms of a team trainer, who quickly applied a towel to the cut. Zednik was then helped off the ice by the trainer and teammate Jassen Cullimore, and escorted to the Panthers' dressing room.

Zednik's injury left players and coaches on both benches stunned, and a silent hush fell over the crowd at HSBC Arena.

NHL vice president Colin Campbell consulted with Sabres general manager Darcy Regier and referee Bill McCreary in a tunnel after Zednik was loaded into an ambulance. Campbell, who was not available for comment, attended the game in part because his son, Gregory, plays for the Panthers.

In a statement, the NHL said that Campbell talked to commissioner Gary Bettman and decided to continue the game after knowing that Zednik was stable, and that the teams were willing to go on.

The league said: "The thoughts and prayers of the NHL family are with Richard Zednik, his loved ones, his teammates and the Florida Panthers organization."

As crews scraped the blood from the ice and the surface was cleaned by Zambonis during the extended delay, the public address announcer said: "Richard Zednik is in stable condition and on his way to a Buffalo hospital."

The crowd stood in applause during the announcement.

Zednik's injury was eerily reminiscent of an injury sustained by Sabres goaltender Clint Malarchuk about 19 years ago at Buffalo's old Memorial Auditorium. On March 22, 1989, Malarchuk severed his jugular vein when St. Louis Blues forward Steve Tuttle was upended while skating toward the crease, slicing Malarchuk with a skate.

Malarchuk required over 300 stitches but spent only one night in the hospital, returning to practice after four days. On April 2, he played the final five minutes in the season finale, less than two weeks after his injury.

Zednik has 15 goals and 11 assists this season.

It was the second serious injury caused by a skate over this past weekend.

On Saturday, NHL linesman Pat Dapuzzo needed dozens of stitches to close a cut on his face after he was hit by the skate of Philadelphia Flyers forward Steve Downie in a game against the New York Rangers.

Dapuzzo, scheduled to retire at the end of the season, didn't return after the second-period injury.

PENS FLEURY CLOSER TO RETURNING

One of the two Pittsburgh Penguins out with a high ankle sprain is closer to returning.

No, it's not Sidney Crosby, but No. 1 goalie Marc-Andre Fleury took a big step toward getting back in the lineup Sunday when he was sent to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL to begin a conditioning assignment.

Fleury, who tied for third in the NHL with 40 victories last season, was expected to be out six to eight weeks after injuring his ankle in a 3-2 win in Calgary on Dec. 6, but his recovery has taken longer than expected.

Penguins coach Michel Therrien said Fleury, who had a 9-8-1 record before getting hurt, needs some game action in the minors to get back into playing shape.

Wilkes-Barre doesn't play again until Wednesday, then has four games in six days.

Pittsburgh is 19-7-3 since Fleury was hurt, with Ty Conklin going 14-3-3 — including Sunday's 4-3 win over Philadelphia — as the Penguins' primary starter after beginning the season in the minors.

Fleury's slow recovery isn't encouraging for Crosby, who is trying for an early- to mid-March return from the high ankle sprain he suffered in a loss to Tampa Bay on Jan. 18.

Pittsburgh is 6-2-2 since then, with centre Evgeni Malkin recording eight goals and 21 points over that span. That includes three goals and 10 points during the Penguins' current three-game winning streak.
