NHL WON'T SUSPEND SHARKS MITCHELL

The National Hockey League held a hearing Thursday afternoon to discuss supplemental discipline for San Jose forward Torrey Mitchell. Following close to three hours of discussion, the league has decided not to suspend Mitchell for his role in an incident that led to Minnesota's Kurtis Foster breaking his leg.

Foster had a rod inserted to repair a fractured left fibula Thursday and will miss the remainder of this season, including the playoffs.

He will spend at least two days recovering in a San Jose hospital before returning home, team spokesman Aaron Sickman said.

The gruesome injury happened Wednesday night during the Wild's 4-3 shootout loss to the San Jose Sharks. Foster collided with Mitchell and then crashed into the boards in the second period. He had to be carried off the ice on a stretcher.

WINGS STUART OUT UNTIL PLAYOFFS

Detroit Red Wings defenceman Brad Stuart will miss the rest of the regular season because of a broken finger.

Stuart, 28, sustained the injury when he blocked a shot in the third period of Wednesday's 3-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets.

He may not be ready for the start of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Stuart has posted six goals and 17 assists for 23 points in 72 games this season.

He has one goal and one assist in nine games with the Red Wings, who acquired him from the Los Angeles Kings for second- and fourth-round draft picks at the Feb. 26 trade deadline.

Stuart has compiled 59 goals and 229 points in 579 games since he was chosen third overall by the San Jose Sharks in the 1998 NHL draft. In his NHL career, he has played for the Sharks, Boston Bruins, Calgary Flames, Kings, and Red Wings.

ZEDNIK BRIEFLY SKATES

Richard Zednik joined the Florida Panthers for the official team picture this week, but saved his real smile for a brief return to the ice. He skated alone for about 5-to-10 minutes before his teammates practised, enjoying the ice for the first time since a near fatal injury in February when his throat was slashed by teammate Olli Jokinen's skate.

"I didn't want to leave," Zednik said. "I was like, 'I'm going to stay.' It was great to be on the ice. I felt like it was time to go back."

Zednik says his recovery is going well, though doctors still haven't cleared him to work out. He hopes to run on a treadmill or ride a stationary bike in the next week or so.

"I feel good," Zednik said. "A little bored, but good."

Zednik has attended every Panthers home game since returning to South Florida from Buffalo, where he was hospitalized after the injury. The carotid artery on the right side of his throat was nearly severed.

NUMMINEN FILES GRIEVANCE AGAINST SABRES

Teppo Numminen filed a grievance against the Buffalo Sabres for suspending him without pay after the veteran defenceman failed a pre-season physical because he required open-heart surgery.

The grievance was filed with the NHL Players' Association in November, union spokesman Jonathan Weatherdon told The Associated Press on Thursday.

News of the grievance surfaced as Numminen rejoined the team this week. Numminen had previously declined to discuss whether he was unhappy with the Sabres' decision to place him on their suspended list after it was discovered during a routine physical in September that he required surgery to repair a faulty valve.

An 18-year NHL veteran, Numminen re-signed with the Sabres in July, agreeing to a $2.6-million, one-year contract.

Sabres general manager Darcy Regier said the dispute will be settled between the NHLPA and the NHL. Regier said the team was within its rights to suspend Numminen, because he was physically unable to play in an NHL game, even though he first began practising with the team on a non-contact basis in December.

Coach Lindy Ruff said Numminen was scheduled to have on-ice testing Friday. Ruff, however, said it was too early to determine when Numminen could play for the Sabres, who have eight games left in the regular season.

FOSTER LEAVES ON STRETCHER IN WILD LOSS

Minnesota Wild defenceman Kurtis Foster was taken off the ice on a stretcher Wednesday following a collision with San Jose Sharks rookie forward Torrey Mitchell.

The 26-year-old suffered a broken leg.

"He was playing his best hockey," Wild head coach Jacques Lemaire said.  It is a big loss."

Foster was racing Mitchell to the puck behind the Wild net when he was bumped, lost his balance and smacked hard into the end boards. He remained prone for 12 minutes as medical personnel fitted him with a leg splint and strapped him to a backboard, and at one point screamed as his leg was treated.

Foster moved his head and talked to paramedics as they removed him from the ice 5:18 into the second period of the Wild's 4-3 shootout loss at HP Pavilion. He was later treated for a displaced fracture of his left femur at San Jose's O'Connor Hospital.

Mitchell received a tripping penalty on the play.

"It wasn't one of the best games refereed this year," Lemaire said.

Foster has seven goals and 18 points in 55 games this season. In 175 career NHL games over five seasons with the Atlanta Thrashers and Wild, Foster has 20 goals and 70 points.

LEAFS SIGN PROSPECT REIMER

The Toronto Maple Leafs signed 20-year-old goaltender James Reimer to a three-year contract. Financial terms were not disclosed.

"James has steadily progressed during his three seasons with the Rebels and has established himself as one of the top goaltenders in the Western Hockey League,'' said Maple Leafs General Manager Cliff Fletcher.  ''We are excited to have him in the organization and we look forward to his continued development beginning next season.''

Reimer was the Maple Leafs' third choice, 99th overall, in the 2006 National Hockey League Entry Draft.

He has been a member of the Red Deer Rebels of the Western Hockey League for the past three seasons. Reimer's save percentage (.916) improved for the third consecutive season despite battling a high ankle sprain in 2007-08 which limited him to only 30 games played.

NUMMINEN CLEARED TO PLAY

Buffalo Sabres defenceman Teppo Numminen has been cleared to rejoin the team six months after having open heart surgery.

Numminen will practice with the Sabres on Thursday after completing a two-day evaluation, the team announced during the first intermission of their game against Tampa Bay on Wednesday night.

He hasn't been cleared to play in a game. Buffalo has eight regular-season games remaining.

"We'll have a better sense of where his fitness level is and we'll go from there," Sabres general manager Darcy Regier said.

For Numminen, it will be his first time back since he practised with the team in early January. However, he was informed by team doctors at that time that he wouldn't be cleared to play until mid-March, at the earliest, to allow his sternum additional time to heal.

FORMER NHLerGIVEN SUSPENDED SENTENCE

Former NHLer Jere Karalahti was given a 20-month suspended sentence on Thursday for being an accessory in a drug smuggling operation.

The Espoo District Court found Karalahti, 32, guilty of helping finance the smuggling of amphetamines and cocaine from Estonia into Finland last year, in a case involving 18 others. He was also fined $15,800.

Prosecturos had demanded a prison sentence of four to six years and said they will appeal, claiming the Finn was directly involved in the smuggling operation.

Karalahti, who was found guilty of providing $31,600 for smuggling operations, denied all charges and said he had simply paid back an old debt.

The drug ring was involved in smuggling about 20 kilograms of amphetamines and hundreds of grams of cocaine, the court said.

The case opened in Espoo in January, two months after Karalahti was taken off the ice during practice with his team Karpat for police questioning. He was then arrested on suspicion of committing a serious drug offence.

The Finnish hockey league banned him in December.

Karalahti left the NHL in 2002 after being suspended for six months for his third violation of the league's substance abuse policy. He played 121 games in 2000-02 for the Los Angeles Kings and Nashville Predators.

NUMMINEN RETURNS TO THE RINK

Defenceman Teppo Numminen made an appearance at the Buffalo Sabres' Tuesday practice, but it's unclear whether he'll rejoin the lineup before the end of the season.

Numminen, who underwent open-heart surgery in September, made an appearance at Buffalo's HSBC Arena for the first time since having a bursa sac on his ankle removed in January.

Head coach Lindy Ruff said the training staff is evaluating Numminen's condition, but it was too early to determine whether he'll be cleared to play before the Sabres' regular-season finale on April 5.

There's no doubt that the Sabres, two points behind Philly for the eighth and final playoff spot, and it's defence corps decimated of late by injuries would welcome back Numminen. Dmitri Kalinin (shoulder) is expected to miss another week while Jaroslav Spacek (bruised ribs) and Nathan Paetsch (concussion) are out indefinitely. Buffalo also traded its best blue-liner, Brian Campbell, to the San Jose Sharks at the trade deadline.

Numminen had surgery in September to repair a faulty valve, which was discovered during a routine checkup ahead of his 19th NHL season and third with Buffalo. He rejoined the team in January but was not cleared for contact, and began skating with the team in the hope he could play in February. Doctors told the 39-year-old he would have to rest until mid-March to allow his sternum to fully heal from surgery.

The Finnish player has had a heart murmur since childhood. He was diagnosed with a dilated aorta in March 2004, when he was playing for the Dallas Stars, and missed five games before he was cleared to play. The condition also forced him to miss one game and part of another during a playoff series against Philadelphia in 2006.

Numminen signed a one-year, $2.6 million deal with the Sabres in July. He's spent the season on the team's suspended list, so his contract hasn't counted against the salary cap.

In 154 regular-season games with Buffalo, Numminen has four goals, 69 points and a plus-23 rating.

DIPIETRO'S DONE FOR THE SEASON

According to TSN, New York Islanders goaltender Rick DiPietro has a right hip problem that is going to require surgery, which means that his season is over. The decision was made after DiPietro underwent an MRI Tuesday.

It's expected the surgery could be performed as early as Wednesday.

The Isles are all but out of the playoffs with 71 points (32-35-7) and 11 points behind Philadelphia for the eighth playoff spot in the East with eight games left.

HABS SIGN WYMAN

The Montreal Canadiens have signed forward James Wyman to a two-year contract. Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Wyman was selected by the Canadiens in the fourth round of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, electing to spend four years in college before turning pro. The 6- foot-2, 204-pound winger went on to star at the University of Dartmouth, where, as a senior, he tallied personal bests of 15 goals and 30 points.

Wyman will report to Montreal's American Hockey League affiliate in Hamilton on Thursday.

CANUCKS LOSE RAYMOND FOR FOUR WEEKS

Vancouver Canucks winger Mason Raymond was injured in Monday's win over the Phoenix Coyotes when he was hit knee-on-knee by Coyotes defenceman Keith Ballard. No penalty was called on the play.

Raymond suffered an MCL sprain, and will be sidelined for up to four weeks

In his first season with the Canucks, Raymond has appeared in 49 games and has recorded nine goals and 12 assists.

JACKETS LECLAIRE OUT FOR 2 GAMES

Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Pascal Leclaire will miss at least two games because of a head injury.

Leclaire, 25, was struck in the head by a shot during Sunday's pre-game warmup. He was replaced by reserve netminder Fredrik Norrena, who stopped 43 shots in a 4-3 victory over the Detroit Red Wings.

Norrena will start Tuesday's game against the Calgary Flames, with AHL callup Dan LaCosta dressing as his backup.

Leclaire has posted a 24-15-6 record with a 2.22 goals-against average in 52 games this season, his fourth in the NHL, and leads the league with nine shutouts.

The eighth overall pick by Columbus in the 2001 NHL draft is 41-47-11 with a 2.70 GAA in 111 appearances.

HATCHER, UMBERGER OUT FOR REST OF REGULAR SEASON

Clinging to the eighth and final playoff spot in the East, just a point ahead of Buffalo and two points ahead of Washington and Florida, the Philadelphia Flyers learned late Monday that defenseman Derian Hatcher will be out for the season with a fractured right tibia and forward R.J. Umberger will miss the next two weeks with a sprained MCL.

Hatcher was hurt with 12:07 left in the first period of Saturday's 3-2 overtime loss to Boston while blocking a slap shot by Bruins forward Andrew Ference. Hatcher was helped off the ice and didn't return.

The right leg was broken just above the ankle and was placed in a cast on Saturday. It is possible he might return to play if the Flyers make the postseason.

Hatcher, who recently came back to play after missing three weeks with a sore right knee, has two goals and five assists in 44 games this season.

Umberger was injured during a 7-1 rout at the hands of the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday.

He has 12 goals and 37 assists in 71 games this season.

VICTORIA HOCKEY PLAYER MAY FACE ASSULT CHARGE

A Victoria hockey player could face an assault charge following an incident that occurred during a game between the Victoria Salmon Kings and the Las Vegas Wranglers on March 1.

Salmon Kings left-winger Robin Gomez is accused of punching a Las Vegas Wranglers forward named Chris Ferraro.

The injuries that Ferraro sustained in the incident required stitches.

Victoria police said they are recommending that charges be laid against Gomez, but it will be up to Crown prosecutors to decide whether or not the case proceeds.

A March 2 report, published on the Salmon Kings website, said an ugly incident overshadowed an otherwise riveting East Coast Hockey League game the night before at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre.

At one point, Las Vegas led the game 5-1 and hung on to edge the surging Salmon Kings 5-4 before 5,471 boisterous fans.

OKPOSO SET FOR NHL DEBUT

New York Islanders Kyle Okposo will make his NHL debut Tuesday night when New York hosts the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Okposo, selected seventh overall by New York in the 2006 NHL draft, will join the Islanders on Monday for practice before playing his first league game.

Okposo, 19, signed a three-year, entry-level contract with the Islanders in December after he left the University of Minnesota. The Islanders then assigned him to their American Hockey League affiliate, where he has eight goals and 24 points in 29 games for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.

"It's the right time to give Kyle the chance to show what he can do at the NHL level," said Islanders general manager Garth Snow.

Considered one of the NHL's top prospects, Okposo is fresh off a solid run for the United States at the world junior hockey championship. The winger from Minnesota tallied a goal and added five assists in seven games for an American team that finished fourth at the tournament in the Czech Republic.

In just over a year with the Gophers, Okposo scored 26 goals with 25 assists in 58 games. As a freshman, he had 19 goals and 21 assists in 40 games.

We all remember the comments Garth Snow made about the poor coaching and lack of NHL development Okposo received at the University of Minnesota under it's coaching staff, even though Snow never set foot in Mariucci Arena to take in a practice or contact Don Lucia about his prospect. Unlike a certain other unnamed coach of the Phoenix Coyotes who would from time to time drop in at the University to take in a Lucia practice and check up on his unnamed draft pick.

If the Islanders were in the playoff race and didn't have 10 games left in the season would Okposo have been called up?

For a player who in Snow's words "received no NHL development in college" it seems like just 2 1/2 months of minor league hockey might not be enough to prepare him for the professional game, unless of course he's willing to admit that the Lucia might know what his doing to produce players that can move on to the next level. Or that the Islanders AHL team does a heck of a job in turning a 18-year-old high school/juniior player into an NHL ready one in a few months.

HALL OF FAMER REARDON PASSES AWAY AT 86

Ken Reardon, a rugged defenceman with the Montreal Canadiens in the 1940s, has died following a lengthy illness, the NHL team announced Saturday night. He was 86.

The Hall of Famer was a two-time NHL first team all-star during his seven-year career, which included a pair of Stanley Cup championships.

Reardon, who was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1966, also earned three second-team all-star selections.

Reardon's career was temporarily halted after he joined the Canadian Army in 1942.

He retired as as a player in 1950 but remained with the Canadiens as a scout, manager and vice-president during Montreal's run of Stanley Cup titles from 1956-60.

Reardon finished his career with 26 goals and 96 assists in 341 NHL games.

PRONGER SUSPENDED FOR EIGHT GAMES

Anaheim Ducks defenseman Chris Pronger has been suspended for eight games, without pay, for acting carelessly and recklessly in an incident against the Vancouver Canucks on March 12.

The incident occurred after Pronger became entangled with Canucks forward Ryan Kesler, who had fallen to the ice.

"In attempting to free himself, Pronger carelessly and recklessly brought his foot down," said Colin Campbell, NHL Senior Executive Vice President and Director of Hockey Operations.

There was on injury to Kesler, and no penalty was assesed.

Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, Pronger is considered a repeat offender. He will forfeit $609,756.08 in salary. The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

Pronger will be eligible to return Sunday, April 6, against the Phoenix Coyotes.
