Miedermayer to Return

Defenceman Scott Niedermayer confirmed Wednesday that he is putting off retirement and rejoining the Anaheim (LA) Ducks. His return was announced prior to Anaheim's 4-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres, prompting a rousing cheer from the crowd of 17,174 at the Honda Center.

He has yet to play this season, is officially suspended, and relinquished $2.3 million in salary while pondering his future, and will skate without pay until activated by the Ducks.

Crawford ordered Moore attack?

CBC is reporting that Todd Bertuzzi's infamous on-ice attack on Steve Moore on March 8, 2004 may have been ordered by former Vancouver Canucks coach Marc Crawford. Moore, sadly as we all know, suffered a broken neck and a concussion, injuries that have all but certainly ended his career.

A statement of claim filed in Ontario court by Moore's lawyer and obtained by CBC alleges that Crawford pointed to Moore's name and number on a board in the Canucks dressing room during the second intermission of that game and said ". . . (Moore) must pay the price."

In an accompanying document, Moore's lawyer claims Crawford's statement was disclosed by Bertuzzi while under oath, and by Canucks GM Dave Nonis.

Nonis didn't confirm whether the comments were made between the second and third period.

Moore filed a lawsuit against Bertuzzi, the Vancouver Canucks and their parent company in Ontario in February. He was originally seeking $18 million in lost wages, aggravated damages and punitive damages, though there are plans to increase the reward to $38 million through a proposed amended claim.

The NHL gave Bertuzzi a 17-month suspension for the Moore hit. He gave up about US$502,000 in salary, and missed 13 regular-season games and the Stanley Cup playoffs in 2004. He also was prevented from playing hockey overseas during the lockout season.

Authorities charged Bertuzzi with assault. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to probation and community service.

Suspensions Handed Down

Nashville Predators forward Scott Nichol was slapped Monday with a five-game suspension for a vicious crosscheck to the chin. Nichol whacked defenceman Patrice Brisebois with the shaft of his stick in last Saturday's 5-4 shootout victory over the Montreal Canadiens. He is considered a repeat offender by the NHL, having been suspended nine games last Dec. 21 for delivering a sucker-punch to Buffalo Sabres defenceman Jaroslav Spacek in a 7-2 setback. Nichol is eligible to return Dec. 15 and will forfeit almost $46,000 in salary.

The NHL has suspended for the fifth time this season a Philadelphia Flyers player, and for the first time, the league warned the team as well. Riley Cote was handed a three-game suspension on Monday for a brutal elbow on Dallas Stars Matt Niskanen late in Saturday's 4-1 Dallas victory. Cote was given a match penalty on the play. Cote is the fifth Flyers player to be suspended through 25 games this season, joining Scott Hartnell, Randy Jones, Jesse Boulerice and Steve Downie on the suspension train.

On Monday, the NHL put Philadelphia's brass on notice as league commissioner Gary Bettman and disciplinarian Colin Campbell held a conference call with Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren.

Last Tuesday, Hartnell was slapped with a two-game ban for a hit on Boston Bruins defenceman Andrew Alberts. Jones got two games for hitting Bruins forward Patrice Bergeron into the boards during an Oct. 27 contest. Two other Philadelphia players were slapped with hefty suspensions for ugly incidents early this season. Flyers forward Steve Downie was suspended 20 games after the 20-year-old prospect gave Ottawa Senators centre Dean McAmmond a concussion with a vicious hit in a pre-season game in September at Scotiabank Place. McAmmond had to be taken off the ice on a stretcher. Just over two weeks later, Philadelphia tough guy Jesse Boulerice got a 25-game suspension after cross-checking Vancouver Canucks forward Ryan Kesler in the head.

Pisani Returns to Oil

The Edmonton Oilers activated right-winger Fernando Pisani off the injured reserve list Sunday and placed him on their 23-man roster.

Pisani, 30, has missed Edmonton's first 26 games of the 2007-08 NHL campaign due to ulcerative colitis, an inflammatory bowel disorder. He is expected to make his season debut in Sunday's road game against the Anaheim Ducks
Pisani scored 14 goals and collected 28 points in 77 games last season, his fourth in the NHL, and has 56 goals and 108 points in 268 NHL games since being drafted in the eighth round (195th overall) by the Oilers in 1996.

Talbot, Pulls Fast One

The Pittsburgh Penquins left the Air Canada Centre with a 4-2 loss on Saturday Night to the Toronto Maple Leafs, but had their share of laughs on the ice earlier in the day.

More than 10,000 fans - mostly school kids - attended the Toronto Maple Leafs' open practice on Saturday afternoon, with the majority of them staying and hoping to see Sidney Crosby and the Penguins have a game day skate. Most of the Penguins, who played Friday night against Dallas, skipped the optional practice but that didn't stop Crosby's teammate Maxime Talbot from having a bit of fun. The young winger put on Crosby's helmet and trademark No. 87 jersey and skated out for a couple of circles near centre ice.

To say the fans got a bit excited was an understatement. After raising Crosby's game stick to acknowledge the fans, the crowd - thinking it was the league's premier player - gave him a standing ovation while cellphone and digital cameras flashed.
