OHLUND MAY BE SIDELINED FOR SEASON

The Vancouver Canucks learned that defenceman Mattias Ohlund has bone chips in his left knee.

In an attempt to reduce the swelling in the joint, Ohlund has been administered anti-inflammatory drugs. He will be given four to six days to see if the swelling has gone down enough to return to play. If Ohlund has not recovered enough to play at that time, he will undergo arthroscopic surgery.

Ohlund would miss the rest of the regular season as a result of the surgery. Even if Ohlund avoids surgery now and is able to continue playing, he will still have to go under the knife after the season.

Back during the 2002-03 season, Ohlund also experienced bone chips and missed a total of 22 games, but was able to return to play in 13 playoff games.

To offset the loss, the Canucks called up Luc Bourdon from the Manitoba Moose of the AHL.

SABRES ASSIGN MACARTHUR TO ROCHESTER

Buffalo Sabres forward Clark MacAthur was demoted to AHL Rochester, opening a roster spot for the anticipated return of veteran Jochen Hecht.

MacArthur had been a healthy scratch for three games before returning to the lineup in a 3-1 loss to Washington on Wednesday. He had 15 points (8-7) in 37 games with Buffalo this season, but was limited to two goals and two assists in his past 15 games.

Hecht has been cleared to practice after missing seven games with a groin injury and could return for the Sabres' next game at Carolina on Saturday.

1921: Toronto beat the visiting Montreal Canadiens 6-4, as the Arena's Babe Dye finished the season with 35 goals and just two assists, a "record" for 30 goal scorers.....Cy Denneny scored six goals when the Senators beat the Hamilton Tigers in Ottawa, 12-5. Cy became part of the first brother combo to each score 6 goals in an NHL game, joining Corbett, who also had 6 goals in a game vs Hamilton six weeks earlier.....When the Canadiens lost 6-4 at Toronto in the final game of the year, Montreal's Newsy Lalonde finished the 1920-21 season with 33 goals and 8 assists. Although he was 3rd in goals, and 4th in assists, Lalonde won the NHL scoring championship.

1925: Doc Stuart got his second career shutout as Boston beat Hamilton 2-0 on the road, for the Bruins' sixth (and final) win of their inaugural season. It was the only time all season that the Bruins were able to win consecutive games.

1936: Goalie Lorne Chabot became the third goaltender in the NHL to record 200 career victories when the Montreal Maroons won 5-3 over the visiting Detroit Red Wings.

1939: Bruins clinched the NHL regular season championship (in the new single division league) by beating the Red Wings 3-0 in Boston. Rookie Frankie Brimsek recorded the 10th shutout of the season.

1951: 18-year-old Scotty Bowman suffered a severe head injury while playing in a junior hockey game. The injury ended his playing career, but Bowman wanted to remain in hockey, so he turned to coaching, and began a new career.....Gordie Howe scored twice during the Red Wings' 3-0 win at Toronto, to give him 75 points for the season - breaking the NHL record for points by a right winger, set by Toronto's Lorne Carr (74) in 1943-44.

1959: Montreal's Dickie Moore scored two goals and added four assists in the Canadiens' 10-2 win over Detroit, at the Forum.

1965: Glenn Hall recorded his 62nd career shutout, and Eric Nesterenko scored two shorthanded goals to lead the Black Hawks to a 7-0 win over Montreal at Chicago Stadium. Nesterenko's 5th & 6th SHG gave Chicago 14 for the season, a new NHL record.

1970: Detroit's Gordie Howe scored the 16th (and final) empty net goal of his NHL career at 19:57 of the third period to help defeat Montreal Canadiens, 5-2.

1981: Edmonton's Wayne Gretzky became the first player in NHL history to get six career hat tricks before age 21, when he scored four times in a 5-3 win over the Flyers, in Philadelphia. The four scores gave Gretzky 100 goals in his first 145 NHL games.....Wayne Babych scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Blues to a 7-2 win over the Rangers, in St. Louis. With the victory the Blues moved into the number one position in the NHL overall standings for the first time in team history.

BETTMAN LIKES OUTDOOR GAME IN CHICAGO

In a news conference, in Chicago, on Wednesday NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said an outdoor game in Chicago "would make sense" and the site could be the "Frozen Confines of Wrigley Field".

Bettman didn't commit to staging one in the Windy City, but saod the emerging Blackhawks are on the list to host one - possibly next season.

New York, Boston, Detroit, Colorado, Montreal, Toronto, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia have also expressed interest in hosting an outdoor game, and Bettman said his "quess" is there will probably be one next season.

With the success of the Buffalo-Pittsburgh game at Ralph Wilson Stadium on New Year's Day and an NHL record 71,217 fans in attendance, several other cities have expressed an interest in wanting to host the next one.

"There was a special, almost romantic, emotional, exciting, holistic quality to what took place in returning to our outdoor roots," Bettman said. "If you do it too much, I think you lose some of that quality. Everything we do, we want it to be special in the outdoor-game context."

Blackhawks president John McDonough believes a game in Chicago would be just that: special.

An Original Six franchise, the Blackhawks boast a young team that is contending for a playoff spot and reconnecting with the fan base. The arena is starting to fill up, and McDonough thinks an outdoor game would build on that momentum, which explains why he's lobbying hard. Given his long tenure in the Chicago Cubs' front office, it's not a leap to say Wrigley Field is the front-runner for now over the city's other stadiums. The Blackhawks tried two years ago to get a game at Soldier Field but couldn't come to terms with the Chicago Park District.

A hockey game on the North Side would be like "what the first night game was at Wrigley, only in the winter," he said. "It would be so special. It would be once-in-a-lifetime, unique, never-before-seen. The city would embrace it. I could only imagine how popular this would be."

One potential obstacle is the New York Rangers' desire to play at Yankee Stadium before it gets torn down for a new ballpark. Other cities on the list also boast long traditions and historic venues.

Even so, McDonough thinks it's a matter of when - not if - Chicago gets an outdoor game.

Bettman said staging an outdoor game is a "massive undertaking" that is "hugely expensive," and that the league has not performed "any due diligence" toward determining the site of the next one. A tour of Wrigley Field - or the city's other stadiums - was not on the itinerary for this trip.

Weather is also a big factor in determining the next venue for an outdoor game, along with the sight lines and whether the stadium's surface could support a rink.

CATS SUSPEND KILGER WITHOUT PAY

The Florida Panthers suspended winger Chad Kilger only a few days after abtaining him in a trade from the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Shortly after the Panthers obtained Kilger for a third-round draft pick late last month, Kilger asked Florida for a leave of absence, which was granted. The Panthers apparently expected him back by now, and the suspension is without pay.

Kilger had 10 goals and seven assists in 53 games with the Maple Leafs.
