Today in NHL History, December 5th

1924: Hamilton's Red Green scored five goals to lead the Tigers to a 10-3 win at Toronto.

1931: Canadiens' George Hainsworth recorded his 63rd career shutout (to tie Alex Connell for the all-time NHL lead) as Montreal won 4-0 over the visiting Detroit Falcons.

1936: Montreal's Aurel Joliat became the third player in NHL history to score 250 career goals, in the Canadiens' 4-3 win over the visiting Boston Bruins.

1939: Eddie Shore played his final game as a member of the Boston Bruins, a 2-1 win over the NY Americans, at Boston Garden.

1943: Herb Cain and Bill Cowley each scored a goal and two assists as Boston snapped Montreal rookie goalie Bill Durnan's NHL-record 14-game unbeaten streak, with a 5-4 win over the Canadiens. It was Durnan's first career loss after a 12-0-2 start.

1948: Goaltender Turk Broda recorded his 45th career shutout as the Maple Leafs won 2-0 at Chicago.

1953: Toronto goaltender Harry Lumley recorded his 44th career shutout to lead the Maple Leafs to a 3-0 win over the visiting Detroit Red Wings.

1962: Chicago's Glenn Hall became the first goaltender in team history to record 150 wins as a member of the Black Hawks. The milestone came in a 5-4 victory against the visiting Boston Bruins. Ab McDonald led the scoring with two goals and an assist.

1964: Former NHL center Perry Berezan born in Edmonton, Alta. Berezan played in the NHL 1984-85 through 1992-93 with Calgary, San Jose and Minnesota....Toronto's Dave Keon scored two goals and added four assists to lead the Maple Leafs to a 10-2 win against the visiting Detroit Red Wings.

1965: Stan Mikita scored his second consecutive hat trick (for the 7th of his career) and added an assist to lead the Black Hawks to a 6-2 win against the Rangers, at MSG. He had also scored three goals the night before in a 10-1 win over Boston.

1968: Montreal's rookie goaltender Tony Esposito made his first NHL start, and gave up two goals to brother Phil, in a 2-2 tie between the Canadiens and the Bruins, in Boston Garden.

1971: Buffalo's Craig Ramsay scored his first career NHL hat trick, and Phil Goyette added three assists as the Sabres beat the Minnesota North Stars 3-1 at the Aud.....Chicago's Bobby Hull began a team-record 21 game point scoring streak in the Black Hawks' 7-0 win over the visiting Los Angeles Kings.

1972: Toronto's Dave Keon became the first player in franchise history to score 300 goals as a member of the Maple Leafs. The milestone came in a 5-2 win at Vancouver. Keon became the 17th NHL player to get 300 goals.

1973: Stan Mikita scored his 15th career hat trick, and defenseman Dick Redmond added a goal and three assists in the Black Hawks' 8-2 win against the Red Wings, at Detroit.

1974: Gil Perreault scored his third career hat trick and an assist, and Jim Lorentz had goal and four assists to lead the Sabres to a 9-2 win over Washington at the Aud. The win increased the Sabres' undefeated streak to 10 games (8-0-2).

1976: Vancouver Canucks celebrated their 500th all-time NHL game with a 4-2 victory at Chicago.....Rick MacLeish scored his 8th career hat trick, and Bobby Clarke had two goals and an assist in the Flyers' 6-2 win over the Cleveland Barons, at the Spectrum.

1979: Detroit Red Wings hosted the Winnipeg Jets for the first time in team history, and beat them 6-4. Vaclav Nedomansky led the scoring with two goals and two assists.

1981: New York's 18-year-old rookie John Vanbiesbrouck made his NHL debut in goal, in a 2-1 Rangers' victory over the Rockies, at Colorado.

1984: Pittsburgh's Mike Bullard scored four goals and added two assists, as the Penguins beat St. Louis, 7-4, at the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh, to end a 9 game winless streak (0-7-2).

1985: Edmonton's Wayne Gretzky picked up five assists as the Oilers tied 6-6 against the visiting Los Angeles Kings.

1986: Edmonton's Wayne Gretzky picked up three assists, to give him 1,400 career NHL points (in 580 games), when the Oilers won 4-2 at Pittsburgh. Gretzky joined Gordie Howe, Marcel Dionne, Phil Esposito & Stan Mikita in the 1,400 point club.

1987: Goalie Darcy Wakaluk shot and scored a goal into an empty net at 19:59 of the third period to give the AHL Rochester Americans a 5-2 win over Utica Devils. Three days later Philadelphia's Ron Hextall repeated the feat, only this time in the NHL.

1988: Detroit's Steve Yzerman set a new team record with a goal in his ninth straight game, a 7-2 Red Wings' loss at Montreal. Yzerman broke the team record of goals in eight straight games set by Gordie Howe in 1952.

1989: Pittsburgh Penguins fired General Manager Tony Esposito and head coach Gene Ubriaco, and replaced them with Craig Patrick.

1990: Calgary's Theoren Fleury scored his first NHL hat trick in a Flames' 4-1 win vs New York Rangers.....New Jersey's Kirk Muller picked up three assists to become the franchise's all-time assist leader as the Devils won 9-4 against the Canucks.

1991: Defenseman Terry Carkner became the first player to score a two-man shorthanded goal against the Capitals in their 18 year history. It came in Philadelphia's 6-3 win over Washington.....Mario Lemieux had two goals and four assists, and Kevin Stevens recorded his 4th hat trick in 10 games as the Penguins shut out the Sharks, 8-0 at San Jose, their biggest road win ever. Tom Barrasso got his 15th career shutout. Also in that game, hree goalies saw action for the San Jose Sharks, when starter Jeff Hackett and backup Arturs Irbe both were injured during the game. Brian Hayward came out of the stands to finish an 8-0 loss to Pittsburgh.

1992: Quebec's Mats Sundin scored his 4th career hat trick as the Nordiques lost 7-4 to the visiting Minnesota North Stars....Mario Lemieux scored a goal and added six assists to lead the Penguins to a 9-4 win over the Sharks at San Jose. Lemieux tied a club record for most assists in a game.....Paul Coffey had four assists in a 7-3 win over the Hartford Whalers at the Forum. It was the Kings 12th straight win at home, a new team record.

1997: Jeff Toms scored at 3:32 of OT to give the Capitals a 3-2 win over the Panthers, in the first NHL game played at the MCI Center in Washington D.C.

2001: Florida's Roberto Luongo recorded his 10th career shutout and Viktor Kozlov picked up an assist to give him 200 points with the Panthers, in a 2-0 win against the visiting Columbus Blue Jackets. Also in that game, Mike Keenan became just the second man in NHL history to coach seven different NHL teams, when he led the Florida Panthers to a 2-0 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets in his first game behind the bench.

2002: Flyers' Michal Handzus became the second player in NHL history to score an overtime goal on a penalty shot when he scored with 36.7 seconds remaining in overtime, for a 3-2 victory against the visiting New York Rangers.
