1921: Former NHL goalie Ken "Tubby" McAuley born in Edmonton, Alberta. McAuley played for the last place New York Rangers in 1944 & 1945, compiling a 17-64-15 record in 2 seasons, with a 5.61 GAA.
1930: Goaltender Lorne Chabot recorded his 36th career shutout as the Toronto Maple Leafs won 4-0 over the visiting Ottawa Senators.
1940: Boston beat Detroit 3-1 in a penalty-free game played in Boston. There were none called against either team for the entire game.
1955: Dutch Reibel scored his first career hat trick as the Red Wings beat the Black Hawks, 6-2 in a "Chicago home game" played in St. Louis.
1958: Montreal's Bernie Geoffrion scored his 6th career hat trick and added two assists, and Bert Olmstead had a goal and four assists as the Canadiens won 11-2 against the Black Hawks, at the Forum.
1965: Rangers' Billy Hicke scored the first hat trick of his NHL career as New York won 6-5 at Montreal. Ralph Backstrom scored two goals and two assists for the Canadiens.....Bobby Hull scored twice to become the Black Hawks' all-time leading goal scorer, in a 7-4 win over the Red Wings. Hull's two goals gave him 259 in his NHL career, one more than Bill Mosienko.
1968: Detroit traded Bert Marshall along with John Brenneman and Ted Hampson to the Oakland Seals, in exchange for Kent Douglas.
1969: Jean Beliveau scored a goal and added three assists to lead the Canadiens to an 8-4 win against the Oakland Seals in Montreal.
1971: Toronto rookie Brian "Spinner" Spencer scored the only hat trick of his NHL career as the Maple Leafs won 5-2 against the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins.
1972: Jean Ratelle scored a goal and added four assists to lead the Rangers to an 8-0 win over the Kings, at M.S.G. Gilles Villemure got his 7th career shutout in the game.
1975: L.A. Kings beat the Sabres 5-2 at Buffalo, for the 200th victory in team history, and a new club-record five straight wins on the road.
1976: Pittsburgh Penguins acquired Simon Nolet, Ed Gilbert and a first round pick in 1976 draft (Blair Chapman) from the Kansas City Scouts in exchange for Steve Durbano, Chuck Arnason and Pittsburgh's 1st round choice (Paul Gardner).
1977: NY Rangers' Phil Esposito scored his 27th career NHL hat trick, to give him 1,300 career NHL points, as the Rangers lost to the Kings 5-4 in New York. Esposito became the fourth player in NHL history to pass the 1,300 point mark.
1979: Boston officially retired Bobby Orr's uniform #4 during a ceremony preceding an exhibition game between Bruins and Soviet Wings at Boston Garden. (Wings won, 4-1.)
1980: Rick Martin became the first player in Buffalo team history to score 350 career NHL goals, as the Sabres won 3-2 over the visiting New York Islanders.
1982: Defenseman Randy Carlyle had three assists to lead the Penguins to a 4-3 win against the Canucks in Pittsburgh.....Edmonton's Wayne Gretzky scored a goal and added four assists as the Oilers won 7-2 over the visiting Calgary Flames.
1983: Reed Larson tied a Red Wings' record for most assists by a defenseman in one game, picking up four in Detroit's 4-3 win against the Oilers at Edmonton.
1984: New Jersey's Mel Bridgman was named as the second Captain in Devils' history, succeeding Don Lever.
1985: Butch Goring, in his first game as a member of the Boston Bruins, scored the game winning goal in a 5-3 win over Toronto. Steve Kasper scored two shorthanded goals 50 seconds apart in the game.
1986: Goaltender Darren Jensen turned aside all 24 shots he faced in recording his first NHL shutout as the Flyers defeated the Capitals at the Spectrum, 4-0. The shutout was the 100th in the Flyers' history.
1987: Goaltenders Eldon "Pokey" Reddick and Daniel Berthiaume combined for a shutout as the Jets won 3-0 over the Hartford Whalers, in Winnipeg.
1989: Ken Priestlay's OT goal gave the Sabres a 6-5 win against the Central Red Army Team of the Soviet Union, in an exhibition game.
1990: Detroit's Steve Yzerman scored a goal and added four assists as the Red Wings won 9-0 over the visiting Minnesota North Stars. Glen Hanlon recorded his 13th (and final) career shutout.
1992: Paul Ysebaert scored twice and added three assists in the Red Wings' 9-4 win over the Minnesota North Stars, at Joe Louis Arena.....Chicago's 27-year-old rookie goalie Dominik Hasek recorded his first career NHL shutout, to lead the Blackhawks to a 2-0 win against the Maple Leafs, at Chicago Stadium.....The National Hockey League found homes for their two newest teams, placing Tampa Bay in the Norris and Ottawa in the Adams Division.
1993: Philadelphia's Ric Nattress scored twice to lead the Flyers to a 4-3 win over the Rangers. The victory made the Flyers the first post-1967 expansion team to reach 1,000 victories.....New York's Mike Gartner became the first player in NHL history to get 25 goals in each of his first 14 seasons, when he scored twice for the Rangers in a 4-3 loss at Philadelphia.
1996: Anaheim's Paul Kariya set a club record for goals in a season, with his 24th of the year (breaking Bob Corkum's mark of 23 set in 1993-94). Mighty Ducks tied 2-2 at Philadelphia.....Steve Thomas scored two goals and an assist, and veteran Scott Stevens became the 106th player to appear in 1,000 NHL games, when the Devils won, 4-2 over the visiting St. Louis Blues.
1997: Joel Quenneville recorded his first win as an NHL head coach in the St. Louis Blues' 4-3 win against the Sharks at San Jose.
1998: Dale Hunter had up three assists to give him 1,000 career NHL points. The milestone came in a Capitals' 4-1 win over the visiting Philadelphia Flyers. Hunter became the first NHL player to collect 1,000 points and 3,000 career penalty minutes.
2002: Jamie Storr recorded his 12th career shutout as the Kings ended a 10-game winless streak in Madison Square Garden, 4-0 against the Rangers. Los Angeles became the first team in history to sweep the Rangers, Islanders and the Devils in one trip.....Mike Modano scored twice, including a breakaway goal with the Stars two-men short-handed, and Ed Belfour set a franchise record with his 5th assist of the season, as Dallas won 3-2 against the Panthers at Florida.
2003: Philadelphia's Jeremy Roenick became the 60th player in NHL history (and the 6th U.S. born player) to get 600 career assists, and Roman Cechmanek recorded his 15th career shutout in a 4-0 win over the Islanders at Long Island.
2004: Brian Boucher set a modern NHL record with his 5th consecutive shutout in the Coyotes 2-0 win at Minnesota. He also broke the record (set by Montreal's Bill Durnan in 1949) for longest shutout streak in modern NHL history.....New York Islanders signed unrestricted free agent Cliff Ronning.....Washington Capitals recorded the 1,000th regular-season victory in the franchises's 30-year history, with a 4-1 win over the visiting Carolina Hurricanes. The Caps became the 16th NHL team to win 1,000 games.
