Today in NHL History, March 3rd

1920: Montreal Canadiens set an NHL record with 16 goals in one game, a 16-3 win over the Bulldogs in Quebec City. Defenseman Harry Cameron scored four goals for Montreal.

1927: Ottawa set a new NHL record for most wins in a season, with their 25th of the year, a 2-1 victory at Pittsburgh. The Senators broke the record of 24 they had set one year earlier.

1928: Joe Ironstone recorded a shutout in his only appearance in a Maple Leafs' uniform, in a 0-0 scoreless tie against Boston's Hal Winkler, at Arena Gardens in Toronto. It was Winkler's 12th shutout of the season and the 18th of his career.

1931: George Hainsworth became the second goalie in NHL history to record 60 career shutouts, and Albert Leduc scored the only goal in the Canadiens' 1-0 win at Ottawa.....Toronto's Lorne Chabot became the first goaltender in franchise history to record 100 victories as a member of the Maple Leafs. The milestone came in a 5-1 win, at Philadelphia.

1934: Toronto's Charlie Conacher scored his 9th career hat trick as the Maple Leafs extended their team-record home undefeated streak to 17 straight games (14-0-3) with a 6-4 win against the Detroit Red Wings.

1936: Toronto goalie George Hainsworth and Rangers' Davey Kerr dueled to a 0-0 scoreless tie, in a game played at New York. It was the 94th (and final) career shutout for Hainsworth and the 22nd for Kerr.

1949: Former NHL left winger Joey Johnston born in Peterborough, Ont. Johnston played in the NHL 1968-69 through 1975-76 with Minnesota, Oakland and Chicago.

1968: Montreal's Jean Beliveau picked up a goal to become just the second player in NHL history to get 1,000 career points. It came in a 5-2 Canadiens' loss at Detroit. (Howe was the first to get 1,000 points).

1973: Phil Esposito scored his 100th point of the season, with an assist in the Bruins' 5-1 loss at Montreal. Esposito became the first player in NHL history to score 100 points in a season four times in his career.....Toronto traded Jacques Plante and a future draft pick (Doug Gibson) to Boston in exchange for a Boston #1 pick and "future considerations". The Leafs used the draft choice to select Ian Turnbull, and the "futures" became Ed Johnston.

1979: Boston defenseman Mike Milbury picked up three assists, and goaltender Jim Pettie recorded the only shutout of his NHL career in the Bruins' 5-0 win over the visiting Minnesota North Stars.

1981: Islanders' Mike Bossy scored four goals and an assist as New York tied 8-8 with the visiting Oilers. It was Bossy's ninth hat trick of the season, setting an NHL record (later broken by Gretzky).

1982: Bobby Smith had a goal and two assists to become the first 100 point scorer in Minnesota North Stars' history. The milestone came in a 6-4 win over the visiting Detroit Red Wings. It was the only 100 point season of Smith's career.

1985: Thomas Gradin picked up four assists as the Canucks won 7-6 in overtime, at Hartford. It was the Canucks' 7th regular season overtime win of the year, tying an NHL record. Sylvain Turgeon scored his first career hat trick for the Whalers.

1987: Dave "Tiger" Williams picked up an assist to give him 500 career NHL points, in a 4-4 Kings tie against the Minnesota North Stars.

1992: Calgary Flames appointed Guy Charron as their interim head coach, replacing Doug Risebrough, who continued to hold the General Manager title. Charron coached the team for the final 16 games of the 1991-92 NHL season.

1993: Doug Gilmore picked up an assist to become the first Maple Leafs player in 15 years (and just the second player in team history) to score 100 points in a season, as the Maple Leafs won 3-1 over the Minnesota North Stars in Toronto

1999: Peter Forsberg scored 3 goals and 3 assists (including 5 points in the 3rd period) as Colorado scored 6 times in the 3rd period for a 7-5 win over the Panthers, at Florida. The win extended the Av's team-record road unbeaten streak to 8-0-2.....Teppo Numminen became the NHL's all-time leader in games played by a European-born defenseman, when he appeared in his 1,149th game (one more than Borje Salming); the milestone came in a 4-2 win over the visiting Columbus Blue Jackets

2002: Dallas' Pierre Turgeon and Jamie Langenbrunner scored 37 seconds apart in the first period as the Stars outshot the visiting Sharks 35-18 for a 4-1 victory. It was also the Stars' 48th straight win when leading after two periods -- a new NHL record.....Teppo Numminen became the NHL's all-time leader in games played by a European-born defenseman, when he appeared in his 1,149th game (one more than Borje Salming); the milestone came in a 4-2 win over the visiting Columbus Blue Jackets

2004: Toronto Maple Leafs acquired defenseman Brian Leetch (on his 36th birthday) from the New York Rangers in exchange for defenseman Maxim Kondratiev, forward Jarkko Immonen, a first-round draft pick in 2004 and second-round draft pick in 2005.
