Today in NHL History, April 7th

1927: The American Division champion Boston Bruins battled the Canadian Division champion Ottawa Senators to a 0-0 overtime tie in the first all-NHL Stanley Cup Finals game. It was the second scoreless tie in NHL playoff history.

1928: 44-year-old coach Lester Patrick replaced injured netminder Lorne Chabot in goal, and Rangers' Frank Boucher scored at 7:05 of overtime to give N.Y. a 2-1 win over the Montreal Maroons in Game 2 of the 1928 Stanley Cup Finals.

1932: New York Rangers lost a Stanley Cup Finals game to the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-2, in a "home game" played at Boston Garden. The ice wasn't ready in Madison Square Garden.

1936: Johnny Sorrell scored twice and added two assists to lead the Red Wings to a 9-4 win against the Maple Leafs, in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Finals, in Detroit. The nine goals set a new record for most goals by an NHL team in a playoff game.

1943: Don Grosso scored a hat trick and goaltender Johnny Mowers recorded his first career playoff shutout to lead the Red Wings to a 4-0 win over the Bruins in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals at Boston. Detroit won the Stanley Cup in 4 straight games.

1953: Rookie Ed Mazur scored twice and had an assist in the Canadiens' 4-1 playoff win against the visiting Chicago Black Hawks in the 7th and deciding game of their Stanley Cup Semi-Final series.

1955: Montreal's Bernie Geoffrion scored a hat trick to lead the Canadiens to a 4-2 win over the Red Wings in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals, at the Forum. The win ended Detroit's NHL record 15 game winning streak.

1963: Chicago's Bobby Hull scored three goals and added an assist, in the Black Hawks' 7-4 playoff loss in game six of the Stanley Cup Semi-Finals at Detroit.

1973: Goaltender Cesare Maniago recorded the third and final shutout of his playoff career as the Minnesota North Stars won 5-0 over the visiting Philadelphia Flyers, in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Quarter-Finals.

1974: Bernie Parent extended his NHL-record for most wins in a season when he picked up his 47th victory of the year, with a 6-2 Flyers' win over the visiting Minnesota North Stars.....Bobby Orr scored twice and added four assists in a 6-4 Bruins' win against the Toronto Maple Leafs. It was the fourth six-point game of Orr's career.....Pittsburgh's Andy Brown became the final NHL goaltender to play without a mask, when he played his final league game for the Penguins, a 6-3 loss to the Flames, at Atlanta.

1977: Jim Lorentz scored a hat trick as the Sabres beat the North Stars 7-1 at Minnesota to elminiate the North Stars in two straight games in the Stanley Cup Preliminary Round playoff series.

1979: Montreal's Guy Lafleur scored twice and added four assists, and Pierre Mondou recorded his second career hat trick and picked up an assist as the Canadiens won 10-3 against the visiting Washington Capitals.

1982: Greg Fox scored at 3:34 of overtime to give Chicago a 3-2 win over the North Stars in Game 1 of the Norris Division Semi-Finals, at Minnesota. Goalie Murray Bannerman set a record (later broken) with 45 saves in his first NHL playoff start.....The Winnipeg Jets played their first Stanley Cup playoff game, losing 4-3 to the St. Louis Blues at the Winnipeg Arena.....Los Angeles and Edmonton combined to set a Stanley Cup playoff record for most goals in a game, with 18, when the Kings beat the Oilers 10-8 in Game 1 of the Smythe Division Semi-Finals (at Edmonton).

1983: Bobby Smith scored two goals, including the winner at 5:03 of overtime (and also had an assist) in the North Stars' 5-4 win over Toronto in Game Two of the Norris Division Semi-Finals, in Minnesota.

1985: Gino Cavallini picked up four assists, and Steve Bozek scored two goals and added an assist as the Flames tied 4-4 with Winnipeg to extend their home undefeated streak against the Jets to 8 games (6-0-2).....Pittsburgh's Mario Lemieux scored scored a goal for his 100th point of the season, to become just the third rookie in NHL history to score 100 points. Penguins lost 7-3 to the Capitals at Washington.

1993: Goaltender Tom Barrasso played in his 500th career NHL game as the Penguins won 4-3 in OT over the Canadiens.

1995: Winnipeg's Keith Tkachuk scored twice and added three assists, and Nelson Emerson had a goal and four assists as the Jets won 7-4 against the visiting Canucks. The Jets scored four shorthanded goals in the game, including three in five minutes.....Vancouver obtained Russ Courtnall in trade from the Dallas Stars, in exchange for Greg Adams, Dan Kesa and Vancouver's fifth round pick in the 1995 Entry Draft.

1998: Blues' Al MacInnis had a goal and an assist to become only the 6th NHL defenseman to score 1,000 career points, as St. Louis lost 5-3, at Detroit.

1999: Colorado's Patrick Roy set an NHL record for goaltenders, with his ninth career 30-win season, when the Avalanche beat the visiting Nashville Predators 4-1. Roy broke the record of eight 30-win seasons he shared with Tony Esposito.

2001: Red Wings extended their home unbeaten streak to a team-record 19 straight games (17-0-2) with a 4-3 win against the visiting Colorado Avalanche. Wings broke the team record of 18 games set in 1931-32 and tied in 1954-55.

2002: Ron Francis scored a goal to become just the 5th player in NHL history to get 1,700 career points as the Hurricanes tied 1-1 with the visiting Atlanta Thrashers.....Jarome Iginla scored twice to become the first (and only) 50-goal scorer of the 2001-02 season, in the Flames 3-2 loss to the Blackhawks at Chicago. Iginla reached the 50-goal plateau for the first time in his career.

2004: Chicago's Brian Sutter became the 15th coach in NHL history to win 400 games, when the Blackhawks beat the Calgary Flames 3-2.
