Today in NHL History, March 18th

1881: Hall of Famer Oliver Seibert born in Berlin, Ontario. He was the father of Earl Seibert, another Hall of Famer. Oliver Seibert passed away in May 1944, at the age of 63.

1930: Boston's Cooney Weiland scored a hat trick to give him an NHL-record 73 points in 44 games, and Boston set NHL records with their 38th win and 179th goal of the season in a 9-2 win over the Rangers, in their 22nd straight victory in Boston Garden.

1934: Boston's Eddie Shore scored a goal and added three assists in the Bruins' 9-5 win against the Americans, at New York.

1937: Sweeney Schriner and Nels Stewart each scored hat tricks as the New York Americans won 9-4 over the visiting Chicago Black Hawks.

1938: Former NHL right winger Bob Nevin born in South Porcupine, Ont. Nevin played in the NHL 1957-58 through 1975-76 with Toronto, the New York Rangers, Minnesota and Los Angeles.

1940: Chicago Black Hawks took the first chartered flight in team history, when they flew to Toronto, for the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

1941: Bill Cowley scored twice to set a "modern day" record of 62 points and won the NHL scoring championship, as the Bruins won 4-1 over the Red Wings in Boston.

1944: Montreal Canadiens became the first NHL team to go undefeated for an entire season at home, when Phil Watson had four assists in the third period for an 11-2 win over the NY Rangers. The victory gave the Habs a record of 22-0-3 at the Forum.

1952: Milt Schmidt became the third player in team history to score 200 goals with the Bruins. The milestone (along with three assists) came in a 4-0 win over the Black Hawks, on "Schmidt-Dumart Night" in Boston. Jim Henry recorded the shutout.

1954: Detroit's Terry Sawchuk received an assist on a Gordie Howe goal, becoming the first goalie to assist on a Howe goal. Red Wings tied 3-3 with the Bruins in Detroit.

1956: Dick Irvin won his 690th (and final) career game as an coach, when the Black Hawks won, 3-2 in Boston, on the final night of the season. Irvin retired as the NHL's all time win leader, until Scotty Bowman broke the record 28 years later.....Montreal's Bert Olmstead picked up an assist for his 56th point of the season, a new NHL record for left wingers, as the Canadiens won 3-1 over the Rangers in New York. Olmstead broke the NHL record of 55 set by Ted Lindsay in the 1949-50 season. Also, with the win Montreal set a new NHL record for most wins in a season, with their 45th of the year. The Canadiens broke the old record of 44 wins, set by Detroit in 1950-51.

1960: Former NHL center, and current Montreal Canadiens head coach Guy Carbonneau born in Sept-lles, Que. Carbonneau played in the NHL 1980-81 through 1999-00 with Montreal, St. Louis and Dallas.

1967: While sitting out with a bruised shoulder, Gordie Howe made his NHL coaching debut while coach Sid Abel observed from the stands. But the Red Wings lost 5-3 to the Bruins in Detroit. Howe returned to his right wing position the next game.

1971: Gil Perreault scored his 35th goal of the season to set a new NHL record for rookies, as the Sabres won 5-3 over the Blues. Perreault broke the record of 34 shared by Oakland's Norm Ferguson, Minnesota's Danny Grant & Montreal's Nels Stewart.

1973: Boston's Bobby Orr scored a goal and added two assists to lead the Bruins to a 7-1 win against the Atlanta Flames in Boston. The goal was the 600th point of his career, in only his 461st NHL game.

1976: Boston's John Bucyk picked up an assist to become just the second player in NHL history to score 1,300 career NHL points; the milestone came in a 5-2 win over the Kansas City Scouts.....Philadelphia's Bill Barber became the 3rd player in team history to score 100 points in one season, with an assist in a 3-2 win over Vancouver. With the victory the Flyers extended their team-record home winning streak to 16 straight games.

1979: Defenseman Ron Stackhouse scored three power play goals (the only hat trick of his NHL career) as the Penguins beat the Rangers 5-1, at New York. It was the first "power play hat trick" by a player in Penguins' history.

1982: Philadelphia's Darryl Sittler scored his 400th NHL goal in a 4-4 Flyers' tie against Chicago. Sittler became the 17th player in NHL history to reach the 400 goal mark.

1984: Buffalo's 20-year-old Phil Housley became the youngest defenseman in NHL history to score 30 goals in one season, in a 4-3 Sabres' loss at Edmonton.

1985: Toronto's John Anderson began a team-record 10 game goal scoring streak in the Maple Leafs' 4-3 win over the visiting St. Louis Blues.

1986: Wayne Gretzky scored his 50th goal of the season for the 7th straight year as the Oilers won 6-2 over the Winnipeg Jets in Edmonton.

1987: Goaltender Mike Liut broke his own team record with his 28th win of the season as the Hartford Whalers won 5-3 over the Rangers. Liut set the club mark in 1985-86 with 27 wins in the Whalers' first winning season since joining the NHL in 1979-80.

1989: Montreal goaltender Patrick Roy recorded his 100th NHL career victory in the Canadiens' 7-2 victory, at Pittsburgh. Bobby Smith led the scoring with a goal and four assists, while Mats Naslund had his 5th career hat trick.....Dino Ciccarelli scored four goals and added three assists to set a Washington club record with seven points, in an 8-2 Capitals' win over the Whalers at Harford. It was the 15th hat trick of Ciccarelli's NHL career and his first with Washington.

1993: Winnipeg defenseman Phil Housley scored a goal and two assists to give him 800 career NHL points, as the Jets won 5-2 at Vancouver.....Mario Lemieux scored four goals and two assists to lead the Penguins to a 7-5 win against Washington at the Civic Arena. It was the 29th career hat trick for Lemieux.....Marty McSorley set a new Kings' record with his 359th penalty minute of the season in a 7-4 win over the NY Islanders. McSorley broke the mark of 358 set by Tiger Williams.

1994: Andy Moog became the 10th goaltender (and second fastest) in NHL history to get 300 victories as the Stars won 6-2 over the Capitals in Dallas. Moog's career mark improved to 300-144-63. Mike Modano led the scoring with two goals and two assists.

1995: Philadelphia's Eric Lindros scored his 6th career hat trick, including the overtime winner at 2:13 and added an assist as the Flyers won 4-3, at Florida. The hat trick gave Lindros 101 goals in 152 NHL games.

1996: Jan Caloun became the third rookie in Sharks history to score his first career goal in his first NHL game with San Jose, a 3-3 tie at Boston. Caloun went on to scored his first four NHL goals on his first four shots (over his first three games).

2000: Ray Bourque became the first defenseman in NHL history to score 400 career goals. His milestone came in a 4-3 loss against the visiting Atlanta Thrasers.

2001: Brett Hull scored his first hat trick as a member of the Dallas Stars, in a 5-1 win over the visiting Ottawa Senators. It was the 29th hat trick of his NHL career, breaking the family record of 28 set by his dad Bobby.

2002: Sami Kapanen scored with 10.4 seconds left to play as the Hurricanes exntended their NHL record by ending in a tie at home for the 7th consecutive game, 1-1 against the visiting Montreal Canadiens.

2003: Lindy Ruff became the winningest coach in Buffalo history with his franchise-record 211th victory, passing Scotty Bowman as the Sabres won 5-2 over the visiting Philadelphia Flyers.....Rookie Damian Surma scored his first NHL goal in the Hurricanes' 6-5 loss to the visiting Ottawa Senators. Surma became the fifth Carolina player to score a goal in his first game in 2002-03, setting a post-expansion record by one NHL team.

2004: Marty Turco recorded his 20th career shutout (in his 181st game, the 6th fastest in NHL history) as Dallas stretched their franchise-record home unbeaten streak to 16 straight games (12-0-4) with a 3-0 win over the visiting Vancouver Canucks.
