Today in NHL History, March 19th

1927: Chicago's Cecil "Babe" Dye became just the second player in NHL history to score 200 career goals, then added his 201st in overtime, to give the Black Hawks a 3-2 win at Pittsburgh.....Montreal Canadiens became the first team in NHL history to shut out the same opponent four straight times, when George Hainsworth recorded the 13th shutout of his rookie season in a 5-0 win over the visiting Montreal Maroons.

1929: Detroit Cougars played their first Stanley Cup game, losing 3-1 to Toronto at the Olympia Stadium. George Hay scored the first Cougars' playoff goal.....New York Rangers' John Ross Roach and Roy Worters traded shutouts as the Rangers tied the Americans 0-0 in Game One of the Stanley Cup Quarter Finals.

1933: The first day game in NHL history was played, with the Detroit Red Wings at Chicago, and a 3:30 PM starting time. The Red Wings won 4-3 as NHL President Calder looked on.

1935: George Hainsworth became the first goaltender in Toronto Maple Leafs history to win 30 games in one season. The milestone 30th victory of the year was a 5-3 win against the visiting St. Louis Eagles.

1936: Mud Bruneteau scored the first goal of his NHL career, as the Red Wings clinched the NHL's American Division title with a 5-3 win over Chicago at the Olympia Stadium before 13,519.

1940: Rangers' Dave Kerr shut out the visiting Boston Bruins, 4-0 and Mac Colville scored twice in the third period in Game One of the Stanley Cup Semi-Finals. It was the first of three 1940 playoff shutouts for Kerr and the 6th of his playoff career.....Syl Apps tied the game in the third period, then scored again at 6:35 of overtime (just three seconds after a Leafs' power play had expired) to give Toronto a 3-2 win over the Black Hawks, in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Quarter-Finals, in Toronto.

1944: Rookie goalie Bill Durnan tied an NHL record with his 38th win of the year, in the Canadiens' 6-1 win at New York, in their final game of the season. Durnan's 38 victories tied a record for goalie wins set by Boston's Tiny Thompson in 1929-30.

1947: Joe Carveth scored a hat trick and an assist, Woody Dumart and Milt Schmidt each had two goals and two assists and Bill Cowley added a goal and three assists as Boston extended its unbeaten streak to 9-0-1 with a 7-3 win over Chicago, in Boston.

1953: Gordie Howe scored twice to bring his season total to 49, when the Red Wings beat Boston 6-1. Howe played two more games that season but couldn't score his 50th goal.

1961: Montreal Canadiens beat the Red Wings 2-0 at Detroit, on the final night of the season, to finish first overall in the NHL standings for the fourth consecutive year.

1964: Detroit's Parker MacDonald scored two goals and added two assists, and Al Langlois picked up four assists in the Red Wings' 9-3 win against the visiting New York Rangers.

1966: Jean Beliveau picked up two assists during Canadiens' 6-2 win over New York in Montreal, to give him 900 career NHL points in 804 regular season games.

1969: Rod Gilbert scored a goal and added three assists and Jean Ratelle had four assists to lead the Rangers to a 4-2 win against the North Stars at Minnesota.....Gordie Howe scored a goal and added an assist for a record-breaking 96 points by a right winger in a season as Detroit tied 4-4 against the Seals, at Oakland. He broke his own record of 95 points set in 1952-53 season.....Boston's Bobby Orr became just the second defenseman in NHL history to score 20 goals in a season. He tied the league record (set by Detroit's Flash Hollett in 1944-45) and added an assist in a 3-2 Bruins win at Pittsburgh.

1972: Boston goalie Gerry Cheevers extended his NHL record undefeated streak to 30 straight games (23-0-7) when the Bruins won 7-3 over the visiting Minnesota North Stars.....Rangers' goalie Ed Giacomin became the first goaltender in NHL history to pick up two assists in a game, as New York won 5-3 over Toronto, at MSG.

1978: New York Rangers' veteran Phil Esposito became just the second player in NHL history to score 1,400 career NHL points. His milestone came as an assist in a 7-7 tie against the North Stars in Minnesota.

1980: Toronto Maple Leafs named Joe Crozier as their new head coach, replacing Floyed Smith, who had been injured in a car crash. Crozier remained the Leafs' coach thru January 1981.

1981: Philadelphia's Bobby Clarke became the 13th player in NHL history to record 1,000 career points. The historic point was a goal during a 5-3 Flyers' win at Boston.....Buffalo Sabres and Maple Leafs set an NHL record by scoring a combined total of 12 goals in one period. Sabres beat Toronto 9-3 in the second period, and 14-4 in the game in Buffalo. The Sabres scored eight goals in a 4:52 span

1982: Edmonton's Wayne Gretzky scored a goal and an assist to give him 500 career NHL points. The milestone came in career game #234 as the Oilers tied 3-3 with Calgary in Edmonton.....Bob McCammon was named head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers, replacing Pat Quinn. It was McCammon's second stint with the Flyers.

1986: Larry Robinson became the fourth player in Montreal Canadiens' history to reach the 1,000 game mark in his NHL career. It came in a game where the Canadiens lost 6-4 to the Jets, at Winnipeg.

1991: Brett Hull became the third player in NHL history to score 80 goals in a season, in a 2-1 Blues win over the Caps, at Landover, Maryland. Hull joined Gretzky and Lemieux as the only players in NHL history to accomplish the feat.....Nordiques' Joe Sakic scored his 4th career hat trick and added two assists for his second straight 100 point season, in a 7-6 loss in overtime to the Oilers, in Quebec City.

1992: Buffalo's Dave Andreychuk had four power play goals and an assist to lead the Sabres to an 8-2 win at Los Angeles. It was the 8th hat trick of Andreychuk's NHL career. Pat LaFontaine chipped in with a goal and five assists.

1994: Hartford's Brian Propp scored two goals, to give him 1,000 career NHL points, and helped lead the Whalers to a 5-3 win over the Flyers, at Philadelphia.....San Jose Sharks traded Doug Zmolek and Mike Lalor to the Dallas Stars in exchange for Ulf Dahlen and a future draft pick.

2000: Larry Murphy passed Alex Delvecchio to move into second place in all-time NHL games played, when he appeared in # 1,550 of his career, in a 3-1 Red Wings loss at Anaheim. By passing Delvecchio, Murphy trailed Gordie Howe by 210 games.

2001: Columbus' David Vyborny became the first rookie in NHL history to score two penalty shot goals in his first season, when he connected for the Blue Jackets in a 2-1 loss against the Nashville Predators.

2002: Washington Capitals traded center Adam Oates to Philadelphia in exchange for goaltender Maxime Ouellet and Philadelphia's 1st, 2nd and 3rd-round picks in the 2002 Entry Draft.

2004: Jason Blake scored his second career hat trick to lead the N.Y. Islanders to a 3-1 win over the visiting Minnesota Wild.
